My question to the panel of doctors is Are you serious??? I do not want to sound cruel, but I wonder if they will be
"singing the same tune" if one of their love ones become a breast cancer patient. I cannot believe these doctors.

it's important for us to separate reality from hype. There's a lot of hype out there about breast cancer. The reality is this is a serious disease. Many serious people are looking at it and trying to figure out what is the best treatment options for women. Every now and then, someone will look at the data and come up with something completely different. I think that's what happened in this case. This government panel believes that the risks of radiation exposure plus the expense of tens of thousands of negative biopsies outweigh the benefits. As a surgeon, as someone who has followed the breast literature (at least I did in the past), I can say that these guys had the best of intentions but missed the mark. I get into some of the risks and benefits on my blog.

Let me just say I've seen hundreds if not thousands of women with breast cancer. Anything that we can do to decrease one woman suffering is worth the expense in my book.

Amen, sister. I'm from a medical family too, and this is a huge step backwards. Hair-splitting over statistics is guaranteed to confuse the public and it's all the excuse the insurance companies need to stop paying for any screening for women under 50.

Yes, I think this is ridiculous. My mother was diagnosed at 33, beat it and it came back at 37, she beat it again. My aunt was not so lucky. Much as I joke about "playing doctor" (holding open auditions for Head Nurse right now! LOL), this statement just confuses a very simple issue. Women should be encouraged to do all they can to stay healthy and alive.

I agree. I was dumb-founded when I read the article in the paper about it. I am not happy about how woman's health issues get treated in general, but what I would say about that is too much for a comment box. My sister who is two years older than I is, thankfully, getting all the tests and check ups a woman in her 40s is supposed to do. Me, I've so far been delinquent since I don't have health insurance and haven't for a while. I do, however, live my life in a healthy way and understand my own body. And I think you and others are right in saying this is going to effect what insurance companies will cover. For shame.

I cussed so bad when I heard Dr. Nancy on the Today Show. They are all on that bullshit. I personally know 2 of my sorors who are my age (mid thirties) who have battled (and won) fights with breast cancer. I have the self exam instructions hanging from my linen closet door. I checks my tatas daily. I will be getting my first mammogram in 4 years. They are crazy as all get out if they think I'm going to stop being proactive about my own health.

This is shiggity to the nth degree! My best friend's daughter was just diagnosed - she is 27. TWENTY SEVEN. Without self-exam, where would she be? They caught it early and she has a good prognosis but I don't understand making recommendations that will kill people. I really don't. Pray mightily people, the devil is busy.

What does that "death" panel know. I firmly believe the we should be checking breasts early and often. I try to check my wife as much as possible....oh and I haven't found cancer yet.
