Bougie Movie Review – G.I. Joe

Since we had the Ebonic Movie Review yesterday, I thought we'd go back to bouge today. So I went to see G.I. Joe – The Rise of the Cobra (<--click for trailer) this weekend after reading a number of dismal reviews. I generally don't let reviewers influence me much and I've found that the more critics dislike a film that is just supposed to be pure action and fun, the more I enjoy it. This was true with G.I. Joe. I will not spoil it for you, here are the basics:

It starts off dismally slow and you do spend a few minutes wondering if it's all going to pull together. It does about twenty minutes in. Even though some of the bad guy motives are completely transparent, they still manage to pull off a surprise or two. My only beef with the film was that there were too many subplots that had to hold together for everything to turn out exactly as it did. You just had to kind of suspend all disbelief in the interwoven plot fabric and enjoy. I also decided to ignore the dominatrix wear they dressed the ladies in as well as the fact that Sienna Miller kept kicking ass in wobbly 4 to 5 inch heels. That and she seriously needs to eat a burger every now and then. Moving on… the special effects were spectacular and I particularly loved the gadget usage. The set-up for the sequel was well done. So overall I give it 3.5 purple pumps out of five.

Oh, Black Folks in Film Shout Out – Marlon Wayans as Ripcord (even though he only made half the movie posters and this is clearly a Channing Tatum vehicle):

He held his own, looked good in the tight suit and lived through the entire film. We're making progress, ya'll.

Any plans to go see this film? If you have seen it, what did you think?
