Things I loved about #DNC2012 and why you care

Whew. That's a wrap ya'll. #DNC2012 is in the books. I found it to be uplifting and exhausting. Now it's a countdown to Election Day with a few interesting debates along the way. There were many, many things I loved about the convention but here are a few of my favorites:

1. Democrats are the party of inclusion - Unlike the white-washed RNC, the DNC embraced all the colors of the rainbow. Without cherry-picking, you could easily scan the crowded and see all races, all ages, and both sexes liberally represented. Why do you care? This means chances are someone who cares about the things you care about belongs to the Democratic Party.

2. Diamond Bill is still shining - I started calling former President Clinton "Diamond Bill" back in the mid-90s.

Diamonds are created over stress and time. They are coveted and sometimes come at too high a price. Ladies love them and men don't mind them either. Diamonds are tough and resilient. You can bury them deep in shiggity for as long as you'd like but after a quick rinse, buff and polish - they shine again. You know how when a diamond is in the sun and it catches the light, it's so dazzling you just have to look at it? Diamond Bill, ya'll. Why do you care? He's going to be out on the road campaigning for Obama and it's good to know he's still got it.

3. POTUS and VPOTUS love their wives - No shade to G.Dub and Laura or Daddy Bush and Barbara or even Ron and Nancy but you never looked ad those couples and wondered if they wouldn't rather be at home stirring the cocoa. Jill Biden actually blushed when her husband shouted her out from the stage last night and this pic of Barack and Michelle tells you all you need to know:

Why do you care? Love's in need of love today people.

4. Ya boy went in - For the record, Obama put on a clinic on how to throw shade, throw 'bows and snatch wigs the bougie way. You don't name call, you don't lie, you don't question citizenship. You merely suggest that a man who insults the Queen may not be up to the task of foreign affairs. You politely scroll through your accomplishments. And you put the cherry on top of the sundae by reminding everyone listening that you  are doing the damn job right now. Why do you care? Who doesn't want their President to be the coolest guy in the room?

5. DNC riverdanced all over the RNC - Tweets (9 million vs. 4 million), ratings, ability to engage the crowd, speak factually while keeping it classy? DNC did that. As I tweeted last night, the RNC talked to a chair, the DNC talked to the citizens. Why do you care? Because now action needs to be taken.

Make sure all of your people know their voting rights and have those papers ready. Look around and see if there is anything you can do to help this campaign. To me, the theme song for last night was Black Sheep's "The Choice is Yours..." Now go make it.

Thoughts, comments, insights?

I need to know why Jennifer Granholm, the former governor of Michigan, hasn't run for Congress.  That woman was absolutely on fire yesterday and she's not afraid to call people out.  My favorite line from her, "in Romney's world, the cars get the elevator; the workers get the shaft.”  I'd like to see her on someone's presidential ticket at some point, but given that she was born in Canada, I know that won't happen.

Was it just me or do the Dems have a whole lot more starpower than the Repubs? Not just celebs but the  speakers and delegates seemed a lot more engaging.

Stan power and a deeper bench.  There are so many superstars in the party, though they need to get their shine on more frequently on Sunday mornings, that they can pick and choose who gets to speak and still have great options for backup speakers.  I can't think of any Republican that's capable of firing up more than a bbq grill.

It's not just you Riley. The last three nights were amazing! People talked about people and not just policies.

Like Chele said, Dems like a rock star. Seems like there are a lot of up and comers.

I'd like to point out all the strong women who spoke. Beyond the Kerry Washington (thank you 7 lb 8 oz Jesus for her), the women really shone.

Gabby Giffords and the Pledge of Allegiance?! I boohooed like a child.
That was so moving.

I cosign  everything that you said.  Jennifer Granholm was on fire and I loved the fact that she quoted how many jobs were created per state.

I didn't watch the RNC but the coverage of both was vastly different so that speaks volumes.

I do care Chele! And more importantly, I feel that they care! That love thing is real! A lot of people may dismiss it as the warm and fuzzies, but listen...Love is ACTION and when you have folks in charge who are willing to display that kind of affection for their spouses, their families and their communities! You are much better off! I'm talking about genuine love, the kind that protects, provides and has compassion. When you start with that, when that's what you're about, the rest falls into place! Now you add in education, experience, determination, confidence, understanding and a strong support group, you can't lose!...But if we don't step up and show some love (support) to this presidency and this country, we.will.lose.

DNC2012 rocked it all the way out!!!

Diamond Bill (stealing that) killed it. To me the major difference between the two was the fact that the RNC talked about ideas, the DNC talked about facts. Bill did a great job pointing out the facts in a way that we can understand and relate to.

The DNC looked as if it was one big party with some speakers thrown in.  They all looked happy to be there and ecstatic to be speaking on behalf of the President.  There were so many good/great/excellent speeches with a few surprises in the mix.  The RNC was a play rehearsal compared to that.

 Amazing!!!

It would probably be hard for me to select a favorite line from the speeches I heard, but this one from Eva Longoria almost made me leap up from the couch, "The Eva Longoria who worked at Wendy's
flipping burgers, she needed a tax break! The Eva Longoria who's working
on movies sets does not!"...I love when a person can speak a truth that does not provide a direct benefit to them!

Let's be real - the DNC was partying. Sure they were about the business of getting a President re-elected but folks were there to have a good time. I saw no bootyshaking at the RNC. Politics doesn't have to be all hateful and angry. It's okay to have a little fun while you're running the country.

I wish I could like this a thousand more times.

I loved the epic speech by our President.  For me the best line was "I'm no longer a candidate, I'm the President."  I was more effective than a backhand slap.  I also loved the obvious love both men showed their women.  I don't doubt other former presidents also loved their wives, but these two have no shame in putting that love on display.

I thought the POTUS was understated and classy.

While I was watching Deval Patrick, I was all, "PREACH, son, PREACH!!!!" I live in Massachusetts and I've never seen him more inspiring.

TypeALady said...

With that EPIC SPEECH, the POTUS played the role of a smooth anesthesiologist prepping the RNC for surgery with PURE ETHER.  All they heard was Barry's bass saying "Count down from one hundred".  They started off with "One hundred, ninety- ni..." and then it was lights out!

There are a couple articles I read today on Wapo and NYT respectively that pegged the president speech as just 'fine.' White House already had  job numbers ( they knew it did not look good),  therefore the president job was to inspire the country.
I think the DNC laid a great foundation by having the likes of Deval, Strickland and Castro, President Clinton , FLOTUS and VPOTUS- these folks detailed POTUS achievements and looked into the future.  In my persperctive,  POTUS did what he needed to do, look the country in the eye and say, yes we have done a, b,c, give me  second chance and we  will get there together.

Brooks of NYT said it lacked "audacity" and that he did not give concrete plans for the future, I beg to differ, the plan for  future is American Job Act, and this  will require congress and the president working together. Gov Romney is scheduled hit sunday talk shows this weekend, I bet they are going to spin these jobs number  that came out today  to make the president look weak on the economy.

All is people  can do now is get out and vote, the electoral  college vote is  still  not on the favor on Romney, granted he will those red southern states, but the undecided still have a chance to change  the election  to favor POTUS.

Me too! I was so proud of her and happy that she survived.

I've been saying all week that the DNC is a Blue Ray disc with Dolby surround sound while the RNC is a bootleg on VHS with people walking through the camera view.

The DNC and all it's speakers truly moved me.   They were passionate and believable.  The shoutouts and love shown to their spouses and family members was so genuine and made me want to love them even more.  I felt like they laid out facts and goals and not just the  "anything but Obama" that the repubs have been spouting.  Everyone had something awesome to say and I for the first time since the re-election started felt revived and inspired.  Who ever decided on the lineup of speakers did an awesome job.

Fantastic convention.  They are ready to get it done.

Right! And while "Jilly" may not be a typical term of endearment it made Joe and Jill both grin from ear to ear when he said it!

 Twin!!! Right! LOL

Cyn. I. Can't. Say. Another. Word! Bootleg VHS!

Cheris Hodges said...

When he said Jilly, you knew it was real. He probably calls her that in the comforts of home. And Dr. Jill Biden has to be an amazing woman to keep Uncle Joe in check.

Cheris Hodges said...

I'd move to Michigan to vote for her.

Right? Sounds like another amazing couple in the white house!

DNC2012 Was totally on point. It was great to see a convention that looked like America. Now the work begins. On to November 6th.

Cosignage on the Kerry Washington tip.

GrownAzzMan said...

Me too. Even if I didn't want to the keep emailing me. If FLOTUS emails me one mo gin imma tell her husband...LOL

GrownAzzMan said...

I liked that as well. She hit hard with that one. My two favorites:
Diamond Bill, "It takes brass to slam a guy for doing what you did"POTUS: "My opponent and his running mate (pause for effect) are new to foreign policy.

GrownAzzMan said...

"I've been saying all week that the DNC is a Blue Ray disc with Dolby surround sound while the RNC is a bootleg on VHS with people walking through the camera view"

Don't forget it's in black & white...

GrownAzzMan said...

Funny, you don't usually get that much fire when they are running. Much easier to do when you don't have to tone it down to avoid offending anyone.
