Question - Since when is winning not enough?

You all know sometimes I can be a little slow on the uptake so I want to be sure I'm clear on a few things...

1) Gabby Douglas won gold and is the first African American gymnast to win in the all-around competition. She kicked ass. Girlie is medaled up. But what did the media choose to focus on? A made up controversy about her hair. First, I hotly dispute that five tart sisters on a website make up a consensus of "complaints from the African-American community." I also disavow the notion that more than .02% gave a damn. All that hopping, skipping, twirling and high-kicking she was doing? Shoooot. I'da been out there in a do rag and a wave cap. Okay maybe not. I'm just saying... Worse, still - they (the media) will not let this story die. It's like okay yes, she won the medals and she's awesome but look- she just hired a hair stylist! Stop. Please. For the trillionth time... WE ARE NOT OUR HAIR. She's a winner - isn't that all that matters?

2) The scorch marks Usain Bolt left on the track are still smoking. Dude talked shit, backed it up, then talked some more shit. No less than 12 reports felt the need to keynote Usain's arrogance. [I have to pause and see if anyone else heard John McEnroe interviewing Bolt and explaining that Bob Dylan is the Bob Marley of American music? Sir, several seats. Quickly] To Bolt's hyperbolic self-aggrandizement I say, so the freak what? It's not like he's sitting at home eating jerk chicken wraps calling himself the champion. He's standing at the top of the podium, medals gleaming saying look at me. Plus, isn't that what the whole hip-hop generation is about? Braggadacio with a booming soundtrack? Don't let Yeezy write dude a theme song. It's a wrap. He's a winner, isn't that all that matters?

And last but not least...

3) How in the heck of all that is holy can the Romney team accuse Obama of not knowing how to run the country? *pauses in confusion* What do we think he's been doing these past few years? Now if you don't like the way he's running it, that's one thing but to say he doesn't have the experience to do so? That's like being in mid-flight and questioning if the pilot knows how to fly. He got you this far, didn't he? The whole thing reminds me of an episode of The West Wing when the Martin Sheen's character (President Bartlet) was running for re-election. The signs on one campaign stop said Bartlet for President. His senior staffer took them all down and edited them to say Bartlet IS THE President. Mittens, Obama won... you're not there yet. [stopping to send up prayer he never is] Stick to talking about what you know - tax dodges, entitlement and rolling back civil liberties. Stay in your lane, sir. Obama's a winner - isn't that all that matters?

BougieLand, since when is winning not enough anymore? Do you have to win and be perfect in every way? Please discuss...

One - I'd pay half my personal wealth if you actually appeared in public in a do rag or a wave cap while still breathing.
Two - You know winning isn't enough. You gotta win the way "they" like or it's not really a win.

In a few words...bamas is crazy. The End.

this might get me temporarily banned..but.. the loudest complainers of Bolt's 'arrogance' are/were Americans.

and it drove me absolutely batty because well.. if one of your runners broke records, won gold and had the title of fastest man alive...there would be no rock unturned to let the whole world know he's American.

Carl Lewis and Dick Pound both need to have a multitude of seats. I'm sure SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE at SOMETIME has tested Bolt for PEDs. saying, small island county doesn't test the way the US does and calling it suspicious, while IGNORING your own history...yeah. -_-

and aren't ALL athletes at the top of their game arrogant to a point? doesn't Lebron have a tat of Chosen One on his back?

*shrugs*

I saw that McEnroe nonsense - like really?
And I didn't see all the swirl about Gabby's hair until it hit the news.
What a damn shame.
Romney needs a permanent vacation - maybe to the Caymans to visit his money?

No arguments, we Americans love to brag and hate to lose.

As long as you win fairly (I see you Gdubs Bush), then there shouldn't be an issue.  And while Jezebel posted 3 tweets that the media points back to, I can tell you that I saw a lot of black Twitter clowning Gabby's hair.  So much so that I went on an unfollowing spree because the ignorance was more than I could handle.  And with a few exceptions, I don't follow ratchet Twitter or uneducated Twitter.  These were grown ass, working 8 to 5, mothers and others clowning a 16 year old AND her mother.  I've no doubt that these were the same people upset when Jezebel & the media made a story out of it.  I guess it's ok to clown our own, but we want to fight others when they do it O_o.

I had to stop a co-worker that wanted to tell me how arrogant & cocky Usain was after he saw him on the cover of Sports Illustrated on my desk.  If you're the fastest man on the planet, you have a right to be cocky.  Meek & mild doesn't win races.

As far as the election, I'd like to fast forward to Nov. 7 and be done with this foolishness.  Rack Rack, Chelly nem ain't going nowhere.  They'll still be chilling at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue when it's all said and done.  Mitt can scurry back into the hole from whence he came.

Like the above poster stated, as long as you win fairly I'm going to let the winner be great. I hate that Gabby had to deal with all of the negative comments regarding her hair--I think the media made it worse than what it was. She's a daggum gold medalist, forget what the rest is saying. She's tough though, seeing that she's gotten thus far shows she has mental toughness :)

I didn't see any of the stuff about Usain, but I love watching him run and I'm not mad at his confidence... talking ish may be his way of encouraging himself.. LOL.

Good day, Bougie fam :)

I missed ALL of that! What was wrong with her hair - don't answer that, I don't want to encourage folks. I mean we cannot win with our hair. If she was weaved up, they would say she was being fake. If she was natural they'd say she was making a statement. What was she supposed to do besides slick it back and shellac it down? Le Deep Damn Sign.
Thanks R4P.

#1 Who authorized John McEnroe getting more than 15 feet outside the gates of the All-England Tennis Club anyway?

#2 My sense is that Dylan and Marley are too formidable in their own right to be compared to anyone, especially each other...but this is what happens when you give random people microphones and no script.

#3 Bolt is SOOOOOOOO self absorbed and arrogant that he stopped an interview with the media to honor another country's national anthem.  Eff. Oh. Ache.

#4I can't with this election and we havent even hit the conventions. might don't make it.

#5 Black folks only truly win when we win on the terms of others.  There is no universally accepted metric by which Black folks can win sans the approval of even the most random white person.

You didnt get the memo? of course not...ain't no memo. this is established universal truth. talk to any but the most enlightened white person and they will unwittingly put you up on game.

Hell, most Black folks adopt this truth as well.

As for me..I will take my tarnished and ignored Ws and KIM.

*delurking* PREACH!! If Ato Bolton wasn't there I can't imagine the (additional) nonsense that would have been spewed on air. If you did your best and someone else's best got you then aim higher next time (see Shelly Anne and Allyson Felix). I barely enjoyed the Olympics this year due to NBC's one sided/ADD/only American/hold onto everything until midnight coverage.

keishabrown said...

my TL was full of very frustrated Americans with NBC's coverage. CTV did a pretty decent job here in Canada. I was at a baby shower when the 100m race came on. lol.

blackprofessor said...

The Olympics is where you bring your A+ game.  All losers need to stand down and up their game for Rio.  Gabby and Usain are laughing all the way to the bank. Period.

The situation that pissed me off was the one involving the Chinese swimmer who swam faster than Lochte.  A Chinese female beats a white American male and everyone claims that she has to be doping, WTH?? I was pissed for her and several American commentators need to have several seats.

When people plain don't like WHO did the winning, they find all sorts of ways to gloss over the win in favour of focusing on something negative, and that's all there is to it. I'm especially mad that black people gave them an excuse to do that with Gabby -- that little girl is one of our daughters, she did brilliantly, and I'm ashamed we could even *see* anything but those two little facts for, y'know, at least a month. She should have had at least a week of nothing but sunshine after making history.

winning was never enough - when you win there's a bullseye on your back.
Usain Bolt is not arrogant - he's good and he knows it and probably gets a bit tired of certain people doubting him. Its why I watched track & field over a live feed instead of waiting for the American version in primtime delivered by NBC.
I will not speak of the GD hair fiasco as I find it to be foolishness - every thought does not need to be expressed.

you need to end post like this with a signature closing like:

WYBA - Wit Ya B*tc# A$$

or

Take that Mutha ***** (Samuel L. Jackson voice)

I know it's not exactly bougie but after getting in people's stuff like you just did, it's appropriate.

so much win here.

CorettaJG said...

It's all winning!  Folks just trying to rewrite the script.

I was disturbed by the media (and Chinese) insistence that if you didn't win gold you lost.  O_O

If you medal, any medal, in the Olympics, representing your country, you are by definition #winning.

Heck, if you make top 10 at the freakin' OLYMPICS that's a win!

The black women who talked about Gabby's hair gave the media the story. Did the media have to focus on it of course not but drama sells and black women (the ones who went IN on Gabby's hair) gave them the story to run with in the first place sadly.

YAY! Bougieland is back open!!! Seriously - I was going stir-crazy without access to thoughtful commentary.

Let's see - Gabby did the daggone thing and all ratched folks could talk about was her...hair?!? However, she showed class and fortitude, even when newscasters were trying to be salty about the young Black girl. She brushed the jealous bitter mess off her shoulders and is a winner.

Serena kicked butt, got gold, and did a "Crip Walk". I think that's right. Anyhoo - she deserved to dance and shine and White folks wanted to act shocked. Well - Serena is always winning, and I am proud of her.

President Obama is going up against the most blatantly shady candidate you could possibly have, even having Republican politicians and officials trying to block voting rights, access to polls, and are trying to steal the election on a whole 'nother level. And yet, POTUS stays on top in the polls and everywhere around the world. Unless the Romney/Ryan...who am I kidding? They are the worst I have seen running for President/VP...even Palin is probably saying "Damn, even I didn't say that crap!" However, Elections can be stolen, and I will do what I can do ensure our President keeps winning.

But, no matter how great we are, and no matter how well we represent, all the winning in the world cannot prevent some idiots from trying to create their own narrative where in their world up is down and losing is winning.

Man, I'm disappointed. I just knew it was four stupid ignorant people...I still maintain that something positive with the same numbers (all the marches and such that we have over here in Bk get ignored)...something ignorant? days of play..I smell a racist rat #dogwhistle

There was nothing wrong with Gabby's hair.   Thec rab pot mentality that Black folk have will continued to bring us down as a people.   Usain is insane and a badass and knows it, That's cool.  And The next 80 or so days are going to get real ugly.   In 2008 even our own party: the Clintons got down and dirty.  Make no mistake the Republicans are going to go as low as they can.

I'm gone come right out and say it: Winning ain't enough if you ain't white.  The end.

CARL LEWIS showed his old (drug test failing behind in the commentary box over here) And Bolt gave him it to him yard style, then Ato Bolden added some jerk sauce and he was done.
