Five things that have me ticked off about the mid-term elections

As most of you know, I'm TeamObama all the way everyday. No, I don't think he's perfect but I bristle at any suggestion that he is Hitleresque, or Beelzebub-reborn, or whatever other evil being they've trid to equate him with. So the results were disheartening to say the least:
Here's what bugged me the most:

1. Apathetic voters - I literally had to get off Twitter Tuesday because people were proudly announcing that they weren't going to vote. The reasons varied from "I won't support the lesser of two evils" to "my vote is going to be canceled out anyway." Makes me wanna holla, throw up both my hands. On top of that, those SAME voters were lamenting Wednesdsay. Wringing their hands wondering how FUBARed we really are. Well, perhaps if you'd thought about that Tuesday?

2. Halt of progress - Those of you wondering just what Obama has accomplished, check out this site. Those of you wanting him to do more? Good luck. Did you not see the Republicans basically announce that they are going to block everything Obama sends their way that does not align with their "agenda".

3. Speaking of the Republican Agenda - Besides double (quintuple) checking Barack's birth certificate and figuring out if they can impeach him, what do the Republicans want? Tax cuts and more money for their friends. They haven't rolled out a single viable plan to assist with economic recovery and job recreation which all I'm trying to hear.  John Boehner. Y'all weren't feeling Nancy Pelosi? King Kong ain't got nuthin' on John Boehner. Enjoy the filibuster. We've entered the world of double-speak and hair shellack.

4. What about my Healthcare? I'm self-employed, I pay Aetna a grip for healthcare. And by a grip, I mean I could clothe and feed half of Haiti with my premiums and deductibles alone. The New Order Republicans are talking about trying to repeal it nationally and my crackerjack Governor here in Texas (Rick freakin' Perry for the 3rd freakin' term) has talked about squashing it statewide. This makes me unhappy in my sad place.

5. The crazies think they've won. I actually overhead pale grey-haired dude at the store exulting, "This is our first step in getting our country back." Excuse me? "Your" country? Exactly whose country is that, sir? And once you get it back, what exactly are you going with it (besides run it into the ground). As BougieMom says, "When the patients start running the asylum, you know there's a problem."

On the flip side,we can stop pretending that "post-racism" exists now, right? Le Sigh. Listen, I'm not going all doom and gloom proclamations. It totally sucks that Obama had to stand up in front of a gloating crowd of swarming reporters and answer questions about whether he's out of touch with "the people."  But hey, let's look at this at a lesson learned. Plus now Obama has a finger to point. If the Republicans don't pull some serious reform out of their hindparts by 2012, he can say, "Hey, I tried to work with them but they wouldn't play nice."

And for those of you who "abstained" from these elections, I have four words for you: Perry/Palin in 2012 - it could happen.  Get off yo' asses and vote next time! Great article over at Jack & Jill Politics on this.

What did you think of the mid-term elections? Did you candidate win, lose or draw? Will Obama be able to get a damn thing done between now and 2012? Should we just all pitch in for a Caribbean island and create the United State of BougieLand? Thoughts, comments, insights?

"Check it out, kiddo: This is not just any Republican party you allowed back into power; these mealy folks are not anything like the war-hungry, Bush-tainted army of flying monkeys and Dick Cheney moose knuckles you so wonderfully helped bury in the history books last election.

No, the GOP of 2010-2011 is even weirder, dumber, less interested in anything you even remotely care about; this GOP is infused like a sour cocktail with a bitter splash of the most cartoonish, climate change-denying Tea Party dingbats imaginable -- most of whom think you're an elitist, terrorist-loving, gay-supporting threat to "real" American values, btw -- all led by a guy named Boehner who wears a bizarre, shellacked tan so fake and creepy it makes Nancy Pelosi looks like a supermodel."

I am delurking to comment on this one. I don't think Obama is perfect but he is doing his best. I am amazed at the selective amnesia of those on the right who have chosen to forget (ignore?) the eight years of mess and 'wahala' prior to Obama, but somehow expect him to come in and perform miracles in just two years. The man just can't win!
I am originally from a country where elections are rigged every.single.time, so I find it a refreshing welcome to be able to vote in a country where your vote actually counts and elections don't result in a coup d’état or cause the country to break out into civil war. This apathetic attitude and making excuses about not voting really REALLY pisses me off big time.

BrendaKay said...

Thanks to my state's election department belatedly sending out my absentee ballot, I paid the princely sum of $73.72 cents to UPS Australia to get my ballot back to the US before Tuesday's election. Any American who sat on their fat a** and did not vote, needs to be shipped off to Afghanistan with a bright red target taped to their back.

And that stupid old fool talking about "getting our country back" is going to quickly see just how much the corporate owned GOP cares about the little guy, folks like himself.

But despite the drubbing the Democrats and President Obama took on Tuesday, I sincerely believe this change in the House is going to be a blessing in disguise for the President and his agenda in the next two years. As it is, the Republicans are already backstabbing and infighting amongst themselves as everyone jockeys for spots.

Ms. Jay said...

The President isnt perfect, but I respect that . I also respect the fact that he is making an effort to make the country better. I hate when people complain that he isnt doing anything. Change doesnt come easy , cheap , or fast. I pray that he will be able to make changes between now and 2012 , but these fools may make it impossible for him to do so.

I was so irritated by people who said they didnt vote , especially Black people. Voting is our responsibility and a privilege that could be taken away at any given time. What gets me is the fact that the same people who didnt vote are the same ones who complain about how they hate the goverment and its leadership. Well you really cant complain , this is the consequences of not exercising your right to vote .

I would so join you in the new country. I am sick of my governor , sick of my city's politics .

Sarah said...

Yeah. I had a pout on my face when I read the news yesterday morning. I voted. I knew this was going to happen. The Republicans started their campaign on day 1 of the Presidents term. The Democrats started their campaign, when? Well anyway. There is a lot I could say, but things to do. I do have a question, though. When I was a youngster, you could still write to the President the old fashion way with paper, envelope and stamp. In fact, even in Clinton's time, I think you could do this. Do they still accept and read paper letters at the White House? Because I'd like to write him a letter of support and I'd rather do it on paper the old-fashioned way. Any ideas? I don't know why I think you would know this, but I thought I'd ask.

CaliGirlED said...

As BougieMom says, "When the patients start running the asylum, you know there's a problem."...Initially I wanted to laugh at BougieMom's statement, but all I could do was shake my head because it's too true to be funny.

I voted and even though we didn't win, I still think my vote counted if for no other reason than to say "I spoke up". You can't just sit by and say or do nothing and then complain that things aren't going your way.

Persistence is the key. We have to keep voting, as long as there's an election, we need to vote. We may not win the next one either, but we have to keep voting. Most successes are built on many failed attempts.

I drove 4.5 hrs each way to vote in the county I was registered in (moved in Oct after the registration deadline in my new city/state). This was after my requested absentee ballots (yes, BALLOTS) mysteriously never arrived at my new residence. Anyone who didn't vote because they were too sorry to do so can kindly donate their pocket change to reimburse my gas and mileage. And they can have a tall cup of saddownandshutup as well.

It is times like this that I am glad I live in California (Rick Perry FTL!). Out here it was a democratic sweep in statewide office. I hope we can export that trend by 2012. I may have to go news blackout on the political shows this weekend. Too many rich insiders talking about what 'the people' want. Excuse me? If any of them actually encountered any of 'the people' they would call security. Voter apathy, I just can't. I would be all un-friending and un-following folks if I saw any of that shiggity. What gets me is how short people's memories are. You liked how things were under GWB that much? Really? Oh thats right the new one's Black. GTFOH...

1. I know the country is hurting but dang! people have selective amnesia.

2. The Republicans practically created the national debt and they now turn around and (successfully) blame it on the Democrats??!! Unbelievably amazing.

3. Lest we forget, there was a multi-billion dollar surplus after Clinton's administration and I believe it was *ahem* a Republican in office after Bubba no? Guess what that Repub left Obama with? Trillions of dollars in national debt, not to mention an economic crisis!

4. It took years for this economy to rot. How much can one man do in just 2 years?

5. Obama and his peeps need to get out there and scream about what they're doing. They are being so incompetent and ineffective at communicating and it's only given the crazies an opportunity to create their own story lines. Obama and co. need to start dictating the narrative.

GrownAzzMan said...

Yes, I voted. I ALWAYS vote. It is my right and my obligation as a citizen. I recently moved from a "blue" state to a "red state" and it amazes me the number of people that are actually against things that would benefit (or already benefit them) personally. Yesterday, I was at a seminar giving human resources related legal updates for the coming year. One of the topics was the health care reform bill (specifically the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act-use this to Google and get accurate info, as opposed to health care reform ) and there are so many things in the bill that will benefit people at the lower end of the economic spectrum, such as the expansion of dependent coverage and the elimination of lifetime cap on coverage and the elimination of pre-existing condition limitations. These provisions alone will have a tremendous impact on families that are dealing with a family member that has a catastrophic or life threatening illness. And yeah, most of us don't think about being in that position until it happens to your own family. Yes, these things will cost more money for employers (I used to work in the insurance industry, so I understand how these things are priced) but that is the price that we pay for having employer-based health coverage. I was (and am) a strong advocate for a single payer option, and taking my insurance coverage out of the hands of my employer (assuming I am lucky enough to have one, and these days, millions of folks don't.) It was amazing to hear the people in the session grumbling about how this is going to cost their employer more money, etc. Trust me, some of the people in the audience were not on the high end of the wage scale. It just baffles me why people are on the side of people who are so clearly not on their side.
As for leaving the US and going to some island-sorry, as tempting as it may be on some days, my folk built this country, and I ain't leaving.

All I know is since I can remember, everytime a Republican president is in office, it's all bad in the hood. During some of Reagan's time, we had to shop at Zody's! (Cali folks you remember that store). Times always seem to be the toughest for "the people" during Republican eras. IJS

Le Huge Sigh. I dragged my mother with me to vote, the rest of my family said it was too much bother. I went off. People literally died for these fools to have this privilege and they just don't care. They said "they'll have Obama's back in 2012" - he needed them Tuesday! Okay, let me stop venting.

CaliGirlED said...

From a mult-billion dollar surplus to trillions of dollars in debt. I think that is soooo much money that most people can't even fathom what that really is! Bush and his administration ran a muck with our money. From billions in the plus to trillions in the minus? That's not a recession, that's some f**ked up sh#t!!!

THIS ---> "it amazes me the number of people that are actually against things that would benefit (or already benefit them) personally" baffles me so bad that words can't even do the feeling justice. I guess I'll just have to settle for 'makes me wanna holla, throw up both my hands' in the meantime.

It's also worrying how that attitude is now such a sad reflection of how ignorant and clueless the populace has become.

blackprofessor said...

I voted and always vote! Members of my family died for the right to vote, so I take that duty seriously.

I hate to see the dumbing down of America, but we are witnessing the dumbing down of America. In my home state of Illinos, Obama's senate seat went to a Repulican - WTH??? For the life of me, I don't understand how folks (e.g., low-income and middle class Whites) vote for the party (e.g., Republican) that ALWAYS puts policies in place that go against their economic interests. I can think of a couple of reasons why but one word comes to mind more than others cough, RACISM, cough. I.cant.

I was at the point at the end of Bush's presidency that if he came on, I turned the TV off. I can see that happening with Boehner regularly. He opens his mouth and my blood boils. Why is he orange?

rozb said...

I have always voted. Even in the military I mailed in my absentee ballots! I am not a "straight ticket" kind of person, because I do not believe in just signing off on everything that comes out of the mouth of someone just because of political affiliation, however, I place the ballot that best represents my needs and those of my community. Many losses are caused by people who vote by ticket and not by intelligence.

But - I am baffled at how many folks who needed the new health care plan were against it just because Sarah Pinhead - I mean Palin said there were "Death Panels" in it. Death Panels. In a health care bill. Not once did any of these yokels read it at all. These are the folks that need food banks to survive and can't pay for many of their prescriptions but don't want help because "Barack WHO-sain O-bama" is trying to take away their right to live unhealthy. Or he is a Socialist but he better not touch my Medicaid or my government-paid for Hoverround. Or being mad that jobs were sent overseas. Those jobs went overseas a few years ago, as well as a lot of wealth right along with it. The same folks who profited from an unjust war through no-bid contracts (Yeah - I'm talking about Halliburton and Blackwater!) are the main culprits in draining resources.

Now, this election was won by Republicans because Big Business can now pour untold amounts of money into campaigns and smear tactics, and can push a pro-Wall Street, anti-Main Street agenda. Guess what? Most Americans are Main Street, so why would you support someone who could care less that you can pay your mortgage AND eat?

I am baffled at the abject and utter stupidity at many of these people. I am astonished at supposedly rational and sane folks who earn a good living and are educated actually are voting for people who tout the agenda of the wealthy. So much wrong with this election cycle, from the "my opponent eats babies and Mexicans are evil" ads, to the disrespect and mean, nasty rhetoric being thrown around.

I voted for President Obama in 2008, I voted in this election, and God willing, I will vote for him in 2012. Meanwhile, I am going to have to put my poker face on, because sometimes I get caught looking at someone like they are the most ignorant, stupid, inbred biped on the face of this planet and it is just too hard to hide my disgust.

I am just going to enjoy politic-free TV, have some snacks, and deflate from this election cycle.

I purposely watched cable all day on Tuesday to avoid the ads. I voted. My candidate didn't win and the only two words that came to mind on Wednesday was "No Vaseline". I like Chele am self-employed. I unlike Chele do not make enough to pay out of pocket for health insurance, so hence I have none. It broke my heart that the good people of Michigan voted in a self proclaimed "NERD" Governor who has never held a public office, but has ran a company -Gateway!. And he ran it right to China along with thousands of jobs, but picked up his 14 million dollars before throwin up the dueces. So he will run out state like a business, but he is unaware that we are people, not products. He will be cutting a lot of our services in an effort not to raise taxes on his rich buddies.
The Republicans will drive the car right back into the ditch and Obama hadn't had a chance to get it halfway out yet. They wanted him to reverse 8 years of BULLSHIGGITY in 2 years? Please give me a break. So since they didn't get immediate satisfaction, they chose not to vote. I guess poverty was not motivation enough to get people out to vote. The lines at the soup kitchen just got a little bit longer.

A long ramble (sorry!):
My husband and I got out to vote on Tuesday, and we live in Kentucky, so at first I cringed when Rand Paul won that seat. Then I realized three things: one, that seat was already in the hands of someone who might has well have belonged to the Tea Party. Two, as it's becoming rapidly more publicized and apparent that these politicians are openly bought and paid for, people will be looking for other candidates who are willing to reject non-public financing and run a clean campaign. (Two part A: It's our job to remind the public for the next two years that these rotten, corrupted individuals were bought and paid for by their moneyed masters, whom they serve to the exclusion of all else, including Mr. Grey-haired Victor.) Three, these Tea Party people will be the destruction of the Party of No, or they will be destroyed--there's not enough room in the Republican Party for the two of them! Here's why: these Tea Partiers will either move into lock-step with the powers that be (namely our other "gift" to the nation, Mitch McConnell), in which case they will have "sold out" their base, or they will not move in lock-step, and they will be ostracized from the halls of power by a Republican party that has simply USED this anger to its own advantage. Co-opt or destroy, that's the game for Mr. McConnell.

I guess the point of this, from someone on the "front lines" of Kentucky, is 'take comfort, gather strength.' We can take comfort that things can still be changed, and then gather the strength to keep fighting for it, energized by this slap in the face rather than defeated by it.

In love!

I am not surprise by the outcome of the elections; I had a feeling that was going to happen. Anyway, I am praying President Obama will be able to check most of the things on his to-do list.

To people who chose not to vote: I have no feelings against you because it's a choice; I understand both sides of the argument. That's why we live in America to be able to do as we wish without being beheaded for it. Personally, I hate politics but I cannot avoid it. I understand it gets nasty, really nasty in fact. This should not stop you at all. Even if you don't see a change(immediately anyway); voting allows you to demand a wrong be fix. Furthermore, if you still do not want to vote in future elections, then do not yell and stomp your feet if policies are past that do not benefit you. :)

Pretty much. Dude just got ditched for telling me he was "too tired" to wake up early to vote. Ummm WDDDA? Not in my house playa.

Don't get me started...I have been Team Obama before folks knew who he was or could spell his name...plus I have never missed voting in an election...and it unnerves me to no end to hear excuses for not doing so...if people do not understand how each vote counts...look at the the election results for '08' and compare with Tuesday's.

People vote against their self-interest because they have been led to believe that the benefits benefit "others" and not them. Market researchers have studied motivations of voters and human nature like a science and they aptly apply them and have done so for years.

As a woman of a certain age...I have been in this movie before...the days after the right win in big numbers...and I don't like reruns...

If you think you were bombarded with asinine political ads prior to the election...be prepared to see the gloating talking heads dominate the channels for days and months to come...ESPN is looking real good to me...First Take...PTI...Around the Horn..etc...

You know what's scary? In Chicago we have a man who opposes abortion EVEN in cases of rape & incest trying to run for governor. How sick is that? He shouldn't have as many votes as he got. That is bullshiggty to 10th power. In a minute I'm going to be singing "I bump my head against the wall" to Willow Smith "Whip My Hair."

I'm glad to see Bougieland represented at the polls. I've been in prayer for some of my people who live in KY :( A comment made by a friend got me to thinking. He said I think people would have tried to support Obeezy more in his first two years but we 1) discounted the noise of the "nuts", putting them in that "aww they crazy" category and 2) we didn't know *how* to help. With so many people new to the political process, we really need to get the word out about how we can make noise (not that shrill crazy-azz mess Palin spews) but make legitimate noise that we're still here. For me, I know I discounted the number of fools that would actually listen to the tea party. There shiggity was so visible to me. As these attacks grow on Obeezy (and they will grow), Progressives are going to have to step it up to be heard as well.

This article was awesome! Keep in mind that it wasn't about his agenda - it was about the level of disrespect and disgusting behavior that has been displayed by those that call themselves American. As much as they want to argue, President Bush wasn't treated with no where near this much disdain and vitriol. Yelling out at a State of the Union address like an out of control child with Tourette's, calling him names and epithets without knowing what some of those words mean (I am talking about stuff like socialist, communist, racist, etc.), claiming he isn't a citizen, even though he has been thoroughly vetted, and those that say these things say it isn't about race.

I challenge any of them to think about that last statement, and to ask why they are so afraid of an intelligent, educated, thoughtful Black man who is a loving family man, a calm leader, and focused man who has an agenda that is working. It didn't happen overnight, and it won't happen tomorrow. It took almost two decades to get here with this debacle of an economy, and it isn't all about whites, or blacks, asians, and latinos - it is about AMERICANS! So they need to pull their collective heads out of their asses and start acting like Americans and get themselves under control, instead of acting like a bunch of spoiled, scared blowhards who are forced to share their swimming pool with poor kids. *key the Star Spangled Banner*

I am now going to bed. Good night Bougieland!

Why is it that people never understand that we are paying for it anyway, in higher health care costs. So I pay a little more up front, it's reducing the cost on the back end.

The path to 2012 is built one day at a time, constantly showing and telling how this country is being pillaged and how we and our children and grandchildren are being robbed of our futures. One step at a time, we will make it up the mountainside.
