This week's pet peeves - Political Ads, Clarence Thomas' wife and James Harrison

I might have been a little rant-y this week but we lived and learned, right? We can all join hands and hum This Little Light of Mine... right after I vent a little...

1. Politics as usual. Jesus be Election Day already. Seems to me the ads are just a little more vicious these days. Maybe not but it certainly feels that way. Rick Perry and his crew have just gone all in on the anti-Obama and Pelosi ads. I've started taking notes. Every single candidate who bashes Obama (including the idiot who wants to get elected so he can repeal Obama's healthcare plan here in Texas), I most assuredly won't be voting for any of them. I really dislike the negative slash-n-burn ads, they tick me off. I wonder what will happen to some of these candidates who get elected and then need the backing of the President? How's that gonna work out? Umm-hmm. Good luck with that. Some burned bridges never get re-built.

2. What in the pure-D hell was Virginia Thomas thinking? Old girl (Crazy Clarence's wife) called up Anita Hill's office and said "Hey, let's let bygones be bygones. But before we do that, how about you apologize?" Here's her quote:

“Good morning Anita Hill, it’s Ginni Thomas,” it said. “I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband.”

Ms. Thomas went on: “So give it some thought. And certainly pray about this and hope that one day you will help us understand why you did what you did. O.K., have a good day.”

Say WHAT now? First of all, I'm still waiting on Clarence to apologize for playing Anita dirty all those years ago. I was always #TeamAnita and 100% sure that Clarence tried to get the hot chocolate, Anita said hell naw and he acted a fool. I'm just saying. Look at Clarence, look at Anita. Nuff said. Secondly, what exactly does Gin-Gin think went down between those two? And lastly, why is she worried about it all these years later? Clarence - get yo' girl some meds and take away the phone.

3. James Harrison is an idiot. So perennial poster-boy for failing Anger Management 101, James Harrison, is a defensive player for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Last weekend he made catastrophic hits (including one blatant helmet to helmet hit) on (not one but two) Cleveland Browns receivers. Since it's not his first time unloading questionable hits, the NFL fined him $75,000. He dropped a few brilliant quotes like: "I don't want to see anyone injured," Harrison said, "but I'm not opposed to hurting anyone." Yo no comprendo.

He announced that this was way unfair (boo to the hoo) and said he was gonna retire. Deuces, dude. Then I remembered that this is the SAME ninja who declined to go to the White House to meet President Obama after the Steelers won the SuperBowl in 2009. For real though? Now he's decided he'll probably stick around. Oh? Mayhaps you figured out that your fall back job isn't going to net you millions of dollars a year to smack people all day? Yeah, I respectfully request that you GO. SIT. DOWN.

That's all I've got. I feel better now. What are your thoughts on the ugly slant political ads are taking? What in the world was Ginny thinking (or drinking)? Can we collectively tell James that no one likes him? Any other peeves of the week you want to share? The floor is yours...

Luca Brasi! Double props for this reference.

And I would have paid double good money to see Professor Hill's face when she heard that voice mail. She snapped in to the universal sister mode when she heard Ginnie Thomas' name. Her hand went to her hip automatically...

I agree. My favorite movie of all time and I have a million quotes from it.

I've been flipping channels like crazy to avoid those ads, and I don't even LIVE in the States (but I have cable)! Just yesterday I was thinking, "Gyat DAMN, how do my American digi-posse members and real friends handle this shiggity?!". And I thought my country's political commercials were chuck full of it.

As for Clarence Thomas' wife, something must have been keeping her up at night as of late for her to think that was a good idea.

YardieChicie said...

Indeed! Which one is more traumatizing?

1. *waving hands here* can't wait for 11/2 , but I know as soon as 11/3 they will be back for 2012. The ads are killing me esp on sunday when I watch the morning talk show. I love politics but some of these nonsense will give me high blood pressure.
2.On to the next one, & like someone said here before, she need to get her meds filled.
3.Not much of a football watcher (if this a real word).
4.I need GOP to come with real solutions and Tea Party principles can't be translated into policy.

Lawd getting so BougieLand is the only sane section of the innanets I can find these days. Y'all need to get on the Net Neutrality bandwagon fo I can't get to BougieLand when the rest of the web has gone insane. Whew glad to see y'all. Any-who ...

1) Ditto on the political ads. Nov. 2 can't get here quick enough for me. I'm a registered Independent but there ain't a Republican running for any office that I would even consider givin my vote too. The ads have been particularly atrocious this season.
2) Ginni - Clarence needs to lock the liquor cabinet after the Friday night social. And we ALL know Anita said Bitch Please before she issued that public statement.
3) It's not time for Superbowl so I don't know nothin bout hittin no helmets.
4) I'm not feelin that Baracka Flocka Flame video AT.ALL. Tryin to ignore it but Lawd do we have to help the nut jobs in their attempts to discredit the man?
5) Why does the media keep giving Sarah Palin space? If they'd quit reporting on her like she was legitimate maybe she'll go away -- or at least stay on Fox.

yourgirlC said...

Uh ... what kind of law is that that commericals with partial birth abortions are allowed to be shown at all, let alone during the hours CHILDREN are watching, but we can't see a bra ad with a plus size chick?

yourgirlC said...

Agreed. So now he has a new $2 million contract w/Fox. I hope he keeps his eyes wide open. He can easily find himself in a position where he is used in ways that he can't imagine.

With you all the way.

1) Here in Cali I have been forced to watch EVERYTHING via DVR so I can skip all the hateful political ads. Jesus be election day is right. As for those who bash POTUS then get lucky enough to be elected and need something from him, I wish he would hire me as his Luca Brasi. I wouldn't even need a salary, just immunity. Oh and a trash bag expense account.
2) Prof. Hill is a cultured sophisticated woman but you know for just a moment she wanted to say B*tch Please!
3) James Harrison, they always need cab drivers. Vaya con freakin' dios!
Bonus Round
Sarah Palin, Juan Williams, Bill-O and Beck just 'cause

That is more true then you realize. Keith Olberman ran a spot where he showed ads state by state and every thing was the same except the names. Scary music, forboding grainy views and all. if I had any faith that people would fall for this crap it would be funny.

Violet Rose said...

That's utterly disgusting. And the networks should not bow down to the money, that kind of imagery could cause irreparable damage!

rozb said...

Wow! Has anyone contacted her campaign office and let them know she probably LOST more votes than gained, simply on the grounds that she has put some inappropriate and heinous stuff in people's children's faces? I can't even think of words for somebody like this. You should tell her how you had to console your child after seeing this gross imagery...

CaliGirlED said...

I only caught part of what Juan said, but my thought was basically what you said above, "...he candidly admitted being nervous seeing Muslims on his plane in "Muslim garb" (notwithstanding the fact that the terrorists were in business clothes on 9/11)."

The ones who dress representing that they are muslim, most likely aren't going to do anything!

CaliGirlED said...

Unless there has been some stuff said (to Anita) that we don't know about, this probably brought it ALL to the forefront of her mind again! I mean I'm sure she hadn't forgotten about the whole situation, but damn now instead of it being on the counter cooling off, it's on the front burner, BOILING!

CaliGirlED said...

"Crazy as Bat Crap Lane"....Hilarious!

So is she going to call all the women he fooled around with or harrassed, or just the ONE who had nerve enough to confront him and put him on blast?

Yesterday evening, my five year old son and I were watching the evening news. I looked away for a moment and my baby started saying, "No! No! No!" Wanna know why? Because there is an insane woman named Missy Smith runnung for DC Delegate to the House of Representatives, who is running campaign ads featuring photos of partial birth abortion. YES! My baby saw pics of partial birth abortion. I starting cursing like a sailor and turned the channel. My baby was crying asking, "Why did they die mommy?" So, I consoled him and let him know that everything was okay. About 2 minutes later, I'm watching the news on another channel, I look away and my baby says, "NO!!! IT'S ON AGAIN!" Same commercial. The newscaster came on and explained what had just happened and explained that legally the network has to show the commercial even though its offensive. I went online and did some research and this trick has purchased ad time during all of the evening news on all the local networks, during Oprah, TMZ, Oprah, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Seinfeld. Even the pro-lifers have come out against her.

So yeah, I'll take the ugly ads if I never have to see another of those disgusting ones she's running.

I still haven't accepted that summer is over, but I'll remember to vote on November 2nd. I don't have a TV and the few times political ads have come on the radio in the car, I've clicked the button to change the station. The ads never say anything useful. What I'm not looking forward to is Election Day evening and the following days and months because the curmudgeons and doomsayers will be out in force spinning the rest as the end of the Obama Presidency no matter the results. I can already hear it.

I couldn't believe it either when I saw the article about the phone call to Anita Hill. Back when all that was going on, I had no doubt Anita was telling the truth and I was not at all happy at the time with how she was portrayed. It is good to see that she is doing well.

I don't follow football and have no clue who you are talking about. Sorry.

Happy Friday to everybody! Enjoy the nice weather while it lasts. The was an article in the local paper about the towns getting their snow plows ready. Really. Did they have to bring it up?

Also, I was the only one there under 31!! I'm trying to be optimistic but I believe Bill White has a snowballs chance in hell becoming the governor of Texas.

1. I can't stand the mud-slinging ads. Especially the ones with the scary music and creepy voice overs. They are so manipulative and are typically stretching the "facts" so far that it would be comical if it hadn't been shown that they are also effective.

2. Virginia Thomas is a nut and a liability. She should have written what she wanted to say to Anita on paper and then burned it . . .19 years ago. Clarence is a Supreme Court Justice. I think that means he "won" despite Anita's testimony.

3. I ooh and ahh at the big hits, but I also usually think that that player is somebody's child and they must be going crazy with worry. I understand putting the hurt on somebody to dissuade them from coming that way again, but I hate to see people getting just brutalized. The NFL should keep the fines (and more) coming.

4. I don't think Juan Williams should have been fired by NPR. I'm a NPR listener and I'm thinking about not supporting the pledge drive, especially with the "he needs to tell it to his psychiatrist" statement by the NPR CEO. I support news coming at me down the middle without the obvious liberal or conservative slant and without the journalist’s personal prism, but if those were the rules at NPR then why did they allow Juan to be on Fox? Out of all the things he's said, this wasn't the thing to fire him over. My take on the entire segment was that he was actually taking the position that you shouldn't judge all Muslims by the extremists -- even while he candidly admitted being nervous seeing Muslims on his plane in "Muslim garb" (notwithstanding the fact that the terrorists were in business clothes on 9/11).

#1 Harrison isnt a DL he is a Linebacker.

#2 There was NOTHING illegal about the Cribbs hit. The Massaquoi hit was vicious and in the aftermath of Desean Jackson getting almost KILLED (also a legal hit by the letter of the rules) came off as looking excessive.
Ironically the most "dirty" hit of the weekend came from Brandon Meriweather of the Patriots against the Ravens and wasnt NEARLY as brutal as any of the other hits.

The reality is that the Game has gotten way ahead of the technology entrusted to protect the players.

The NFL is merely overreacting after the fact.

If they REALLY wanna protect defenseless receivers then theyll Roll back the rule changes against Bump and run coverage and Let Defenders DEFEND...rather than REACT once the ball is in the air.

But they dont want that...and neither do the fans.

My fandom isnt on the line here, Derek. If it was Antwaan Randle El and whomever is playing LB for the Browns these days, I would say the same thing...But with you not actually KNOWING me...you wouldn't necessarily know that.

James

David Parrish, Jr.(Inkognegro) said...

I got a soft spot in my heart for James Harrison. Ive had the pleasure of meeting him and having extended conversation with him.

You know how people talk about how folks get big and change?

Nope, not James Harrison.

He is completely impervious to PR spin.

James Harrison don't like to fly. If he aint going to a game...he ain't flying. He ain't go to see Bush, he aint going to See Obama. He aint going to see no one. he plays football. Thats.It.

NOW then...I could go all Football geek about how eliminating bump and run coverage has made stopping the short passing game virtually impossible, all but encouraging The kind of hits we saw.

The man said he didnt wish to injure anyone. Show me a defensive player out here not trying to hurt someone and ill show you either Deion Sanders or a player not long for the NFL.

Shame on Him for saying so.

As for the whole retirement thing? if doing your job is going to cost you 75K plus a game...It would make me ponder my purpose in the universe for a day, too.

Separating the man from the ball is what defense is....The Cribbs hit was perfectly legal

1) The ads in South Florida are crazy. Makes it seem like none of the available options are good, as you say - Le Sigh.
2) Ginni needs to Go. Sit. Down.
3) James is not gonna change. A 75k fine for someone who makes millions is not going to have an impact.

Now, what say you about NPR firing Juan Williams? I say Boo!

Only the Tall said...

Ole "Ginni" needs to call "Craig" and leave Anita alone. I mean, look at ole girl and look at Anita. He probably called Ms. Hill's name out in a heat of passion (sickens me to even think he, they, do the do) and perhaps that's what sent Mrs. Crazy over the edge. She has to be on meds.

Only the Tall said...

I'm sorry, Williams should have been fired, because you know if it was a non-black person saying something along the lines of "you know, when I see a Black man or men, with full hip-hop garb on, I get scared for my life, you know what I mean"? There would have been blood on the dancefloor. So another one bites the dust for his choice of words, but hey, he just got signed with Fox for a multi-year deal and he'll host O'Reilly's show on Fridays. All disorder has been restored.

The Fanny Pack said...

Methinks Old Gini's extension of the "olive branch" to Anita Hill is not as random as we all would like to believe. CLEARLY for the past 20 years, dredging up tales of Anita has served the Thomases well as effective nightly pillow talk *rolls eyes*

Seriously though, she needs to empty out the Kettle One bottle and go stand in the corner!

I think Thomas' actions are a misdirection. I'm pretty sure at some point we'll find out about something Justice Thomas did, or something Mrs. Thomas' non-profit did which is MUCH worse than the offending phone call. It was too out of left field for me not to assume Rov-ian intentions.

I live near the state line so I have the misfortune of seeing crazy S. Carolina and Georgia political ads. They are so atrocious that I try to avoid watching local tv stations.

Ginni is slap crazy! Since she suggested that Anita pray about what she said, shouldn't she have already prayed and made the decision to "Let go and Let God" sometime during the last 19 years.
If she is still upset enough to contact Anita almost 2 decades later, she needs to look a little closer at her relationship and Ole Clarence's actions.

derek love said...

So then - Steelers' fan huh? I could go all football geek about how other talented DLs manage to do their jobs without intentionally taking off heads. He wouldn't have to pay 75k a game if he played according to the rules.

Grace said...

I rarely watch anything live on TV anymore. The wonder of the DVR means I don't live through those terrible commercials.

Ginny did WHAT?! I don't know where I've been but I'm just hearing this. She is a special kind of crazy.

Not a Steelers fan. Not a Harrison fan. The hit on Massaquoi was deliberately illegal.

rozb said...

1. Here in Virginia the ads are mean, nasty, and misleading. I couldn't tell you how many times I have had to tell someone to stop acting like a mental midget and research some of those dubious ad claims! And every Democratic candidate is painted with the Obama-Pelosi-Reid brush, saying things like "They will vote lockstep with them on everything" or "I will work to repeal the healthcare bill that the Obama-Pelosi-Reid team pushed on us." Never mind that regardless of party affiliation, you will benefit from the healthcare plan. Most people cannot see past their own political views or listen to something other than some pundit or news station that parrots their narrow viewpoint. The dumbing down of America, people. I call these negative ads the "My opponent eats babies" ads because if the opponent isn't blatantly horrible or scandalous, their campaign will try anything to put the other in a bad light. Except that O'Donnell really is a witch...

2. Can Virginia Thomas blame it on the a-a-a-alcohol? Who in the holy hell thinks it would ever be okay to get on the phone at 7:30 on a Saturday morning and call a voicemail to tell someone to apologize for something HER husband did 20 years ago? AND call it extending an olive branch? WDDDA?!?!? I think it was a ploy to distract from the bad press she is receiving about shady financial doings she is involved in with her various Republican and Tea Party organizations. Clarence is probably her only Black friend, because any Sister would have told her that is some ratched ass mess to even attempt, and she might not want to do that. Anita waited a week before turning in the offensive message because I bet she made sure all her girlfriends listened to it and had a good laugh. She stayed classy, though, and Ginny...well...if you can't say something nice...

3. James Harrison has brain damage. "Nuff said...

Bonus. Juan Williams should not have been fired, because whether he was right or wrong, he is entitled to his opinion. I thought what he said was heinous, and not thought out at all, but at least you know where he stands. Even though Fox News jumped in to save his day, he has had time to think of what he said, and hopefully get over his fear of Muslims. Wonder if he knows how much white folks fear him when he gets on a plane, train, bus, sidewalk, elevator, etc...So if you are a pundit, or host a show you cannot have an opinion if it does not fall lockstep in with the media that supports you. Wow...

Chele - don't kick me from Bougieland...

Not sure what possessed Mrs. Thomas to leave a message on Ms. Hill's voice mail (at her office number) on Saturday morning at 7:30 AM. Clearly, she did not expect to really speak to Ms. Hill. However, here is an article in today's "Washington Post" (link at the bottom of the post) from Justice Thomas' prior girlfriend-she pretty much corroborates that Justice Thomas had a history of making inappropriate comments to and about the women employees in his office (as did other women who worked there stated, but they did not testify at the hearings.) This lady has written a book and is now trying to find a publisher. Bet Mrs. Thomas really wishes she never made that phone call.
