When Bad Colds happen to Bougie Chicks

It started with a groan. I rolled out of bed last Monday morning and everything hurt. It didn't concern me much, you young 'uns will learn that as you get older, sometimes things hurt for no damn good reason. Ever notice how much folks over 35 start talking about mattresses and massages? Seriously, I was up in MattressLand talking sleep numbers and firm vs. euro pillow top for at least an hour. Yeah, it's crucial.

But as the morning went on, I tried some yoga, a healthy breakfast, hydrating and... I felt worse, not better. By noon my throat was sore and I had that feeling that a band was tightening around my head. I decided to take a nap. I announced to all that it was naptime and proceeded to go comatose for four hours straight.

Backstory: BougieOlderSis was in town and BougieMom had doctor's appointments. New Dude and I were having some beef (more on that later in the week), three girlfriends needed to catch up, I had work stuff and book stuff and social stuff I absolutely positively had to get done... I am a person who likes to have my finger on the pulse of all that's around me. I like to be in control of my domain. My body went gangster and told my brain, "That's too damn bad. We tired. And in case you thought I was playing with you, how do you feel about not taking in oxygen? You like that? Sit. Down."

By Tuesday morning, I thought it was a bad cold and I could sweat it out. By Wednesday BougieMom flung Kleenex at the stairs and told me not to come down. BougieOlderSis politely told me I sounded like death and suggested baptism by holy water (or maybe she just told me to put my behinds in the shower, it's all a blur). Clearly, it was time to consult the professionals. BougieOlderBro is a trauma surgeon. I called begging for pharmaceutical assistance. My primary care physician BlackBerry Messengered me to remind me that I had this same thing last year. Started as a cold, I ignored it and it turned into sinusitis, then bronchitis and walking pneumonia. She politely told me to go pick up the serious meds and don't get up until told otherwise. I gave up, got the meds and turned my bedroom into a fortress of solitude. (Hence the Bougie Down post last week)

And by the way, in one of the many ways I take after my late, great father - I am not a pleasant patient. I am anxious to be well, upright and fully about my business. I snapped at family, friends and told New Dude that if he sent me one more "how are you doing, baby" texts he was cut forever. What can I say, I was on quite the drug cocktail. Plus, now that I've developed a fruit allergy - no juice for me. Now that's just mean. I started dreaming that bottles of Arizona Green Tea with Honey & Ginseng were chasing me over cliffs in Hawaii. (I mentioned the drugs were good, right?)

I say all of this to say to my fellow stubborn "I feel fine, it's only a cold" folks - sit your behinds down for a minute. Take a breath (and some NyQuil) and take care of yourself. I'm at about 90%. Be back to 110% by Wednesday.

Oh, time out for some Bougie Bidness. Happy Birthday to Bougie Regular Michael Davis and Happy Wedding Week to one of my very first Bougienistas - Tiffany in Houston. Salutations and well wishes to BougieLand Faithful.

So, do we have folks in BougieLand who won't admit when they're sick? Refuse to take meds? Believe you can sleep when you're dead? What's your favorite "get well" remedy? Do share your wellness tips, I promise to take notes.

Glad you are feeling better. Those were some good drugs based on the wildness of that dream.

Don't laugh but my Grandmother would swear by Vick's Vapor Rub especially on the soles of your feet. I have to feel like yesterday and the day before to actually use it. It is much better than the cod liver oil she would force down my throat.

well see I have Lupus, pretending not to be sick? Not even an option, if i even feel a twidge that wasn't there before Im calling my doctor to let them know cause it could be a new symtom or a way bigger issue than i thought. When i do get sick, Im done for the count, there's no pretending to feel good, its get the hell to bed and come out when i can walk upright without thinking about meeting the floor and staying a while.

I think women, black women in particular forget that you can't take care of everyone without taking care of you first. If it doesn't feel right Take yourself to the nearest clinic.
The most important lesson I learned from having Lupus, if you don't take care of your body, it can't take care of you
Glad your feeling better

Believe me when I tell you that copious amounts of rest is essential to your body healing. If I have clogged sinuses, blowing your nose constantly just makes it sore and red. I use the neti pot to rinse out all the "stuff" that just won't go, and that helps to clear the head. I drink a peppermint tea with lemon and honey to soothe the throat and food pipe, especially, if I had been coughing up parts of my lung (YUCK!) And before I turn in for that evening, I take a hot, steamy bath with some Epsom salts and lavender oil to ease body aches, sweat a little bit of toxins out, and relax me.

If you have to, you must change your sheets each night, or at least spray bed linen with Lysol spray to keep you from laying back down in the germ den. Oh yeah, NyQuil, or Theraflu tea will help you sleep. Finally, drink lots and lots of water to keep the kidneys and liver clean and clear - they have been trying to rid you of the bug that is beating you down and need to be "irrigated".

Too much? :/ Hope you get back to 110% soon!

That sux...hope you feel better. I hate colds. I havent had a one in years--knock wood ,but when I get one I just ride with it. I don't take cold medicne. I'm of the wierd mind frame of just let your body do what it does. And Nyquil should just go ahead and start stocking thier product at the liquor stores, it would be more apropos. But REST. That is the best thing.

I'm feeling sick right now and I know it's probably a sinus infection. Simlar to you, I get bogged down with a sinus infection every year this time. *sighs heavily* Feel better!

I almost never get sick but when I feel a cold coming on I load up on vitamin C and make a huge pot of homemade chicken soup. Works every time!

I used to get the flu every year around the same time, Dec or Jan, and a bad cold & sinus attack around April, sometimes June. (I lived in L.A., the Santa Ana winds are torturous!) I have found that the extra dose of vitamin C that I get taking Emergen-C and an immune booster that I take everyday has seemed to have kept these colds and sinus attacks from happening for the past few years. And I noticed that when I would stop taking them, I would start feeling bad within a few weeks.

I am so gulity of this. I won't go to the doctor until the mucus is brightly colored. And I never take a day off. I go to work like I'm a postal carrier...

I do this all the time, last time I was sick I ended up falling out in the Target before I went to get help. I don't know - maybe it's part of our Superwoman complex. But I'll do better!

3 parts tea with ginger or mint or lemon, 1 part honey with a slosh of rum every six hours! Bundle up and sweat it out!

I don't take meds and I don't get sick - ever. Not sure what I'd do if I did.

I usually get an upper respiratory infection once or twice a year. It starts as a sore throat and moves down into my lungs and starts aggravating my asthma. I have found that gargling with salt water helps with the sore throat and 'speeds up' the process so I feel better faster. Sometimes I have to take prednisone for a few days to get the asthma under control. It usually occurs with the change of the seasons, all the pollen, trees, and grasses and such.

By the way, what about the coworkers that are deathly ill and come to work anyway? The horrendous sneezes and coughs are just too much, and they spread their misery to everyone.

I hope you feel better soon.

Ugh - I'm on day 5 of the 7 day Prednisone pack right now. Good times.

Water, water, water. I've started drinking close to two liters a day and I've never felt better.

Ok, just cause all three of these describe and #3 was actually my facebook status one day last week doesn't mean I have a problem right? LOL

CaliGirlED said...

Have you taken prednisone before? If not, beware of withdrawals when you stop taking it, if your dosage is high and they don't wein you off of it. It's nothing really bad, but when I had to take it after an allergic reaction to shellfish (life threatening, from my MOST FAVORITE food in the whole wide world!), my body was sore and achy and a physical therapist told me I was having withdrawals from the prednisone. But it only last for a couple of days.

Still haven't gotten over being allergic to my favorite food! LeSigh

I definitely co-sign on the water! I used to go days without drinking it. And now that I drink it regularly my body craves it and I get dehydrated quickly if I slack up.

LOL!!! I thought about you when I read that part, "Believe you can sleep when you're dead?"

thank you!!!

Let's put it this way, since I forced to start drinking water 4 years ago as the result of a heart attack (coronary artery disease), I rarely have colds, I feel much better, don't have afternoon headaches, and I am losing weight. Drink water, people.

I don't get sick often but when I do it's "MAN DOWN!" I generally take very good care of myself. Exercise, relatively healthy eating, etc. I get my rest. My body has declared it will not operate on anything less than 7 hours of sleep. If I don't get it at night, involuntary naps will be deployed.

BB Waite said...

I want to laugh but Mr. Waite and I spent four hours in Mattress Giant talking posturepedic and temperature contour foam just this weekend. Who knew how important coils were?

CaliGirlED said...

LOL @ involuntary naps!!!...Yeah water is definitely good for your health.
