@DanielSunjata, @HollyRPeete & four other celebrathletalities you should follow on Twitter

Yes, celebrathletalities - celebrity/athlete/personalities, you knew what I meant. As you can tell, I'm not blogging the deep thoughtful topics this week. I'm in South Florida and so my posts are sunny and light. Today we're talking about celebs on Twitter.

Be warned that following your favorite actor, athlete, singer, writer, celebutante can be pure disillusionment. It becomes very clear, very quickly that some people are paid to be pretty and little else. Some folks are skilled in the field of play but no where else. Some are talentless egomaniacs who just want love and really should let their publicists tweet on their behalf. But I shan't name names. If you've run across of these, you know what I mean.

Thankfully, there are exceptions to the rule. I'm sure there are more but these are my faves:

Daniel Sunjata - @DanielSunjata - Mr. Sunjata plays Franco on Rescue Me one of my favorite shows. Okay so I started following him because he's hot, I admit it. But I quickly discovered that he's also intelligent, socially conscious and darn it, just an all-around nice guy. It's like he doesn't realize he's way too fine to be tweeting with the likes of us. If I looked like him, I'd ignore the hell out of all y'all. (Just kiddingish) He answers questions, sent me some eye-opening (if distressing) information on the privatization of the prison systems and always has a thought-provoking conspiracy theory to share.

Donna Brazile - @DonnaBrazile - If you've watched her on CNN going toe to toe with Anderson Cooper and the gang, you already know... she's smart and she speaks her mind. She does the same on Twitter. Sometimes political insiders can be a little too "inside the Matrix" for me but she breaks it down to the least common denominator and dishes it straight.

Holly Peete - @HollyRPeete - She's a mom, a wife, an actress, an entrepreneur, an activist and a football enthusiast. She has the nerve to be cute and in incredible shape as well. If you can't follow her just for her impersonation of Wonder Woman, how about she's warm, humble and tweets back... without artifice. Check out her HollyRod Foundation for the great work they are doing particularly with autism.

Donte Stallworth - @D_Stallworth18 - Sure he's an athlete and y'all want to stereotype but check his timeline for a day or two - he's ridiculously well-read, humble and a little obsessive about his workouts. Trust me, he's one to know.

Cory Booker - @CoryBooker - I don't know when the mayor of Brick City sleeps because dedicated dude is answering citizen tweets at midnight and again at 4:00 in the morning. Literally, tweet him about a pothole in Newark, he gets it fixed. The mayor of Dallas? Don't get me started. Mayor Booker is a quadruple-degreed bona fide Bougie Hero. He's Dat Dude. Follow him and learn a little something about hustle that works.

Lalah Hathaway - @LalahHathaway - She's talented, she's gorgeous and she tweets back. What more do you want from one of the most slept on artists out there? So sure, follow her but more importantly - buy all her music, she's gifted and never disappoints.

I do get it, celebrity ain't easy. Just because you're in the public eye doesn't necessarily mean you owe the public any thing but it's far more pleasant to come across a famous personality that has some brains and pleasantries to back the rest of it up. Okay, do you have anyone to add to the list? Let's be honest - is there a celeb you followed and then quickly unfollowed in sheer disappointment? For those that don't tweet, who has a "I met a celeb and it was awesome" story? Thoughts on my list? Do share...

Daniel Sunjata? Really? Yes, I would not have thought that. I'll have to check him out... for educational purposes only. I followed Kirstie Alley for about an hour. :-/

No Oprah? No Barack Obama?

Liselle said...

I didn't know these people were on Twitter. Le sigh. Not sure I fully understand the value of tweeting.

Mr. Skyywalker said...

You found an intelligent athlete? I tried following T.O., Shaq and a couple of others - terrible decision. Random Narcissism at it's worst.

Miss-Devin Kemp said...

Barack's on fb *kanye shrug*

Miss-Devin Kemp said...

For some reason, I had a brunette moment and decided to follow Ochocinco...that ninja needs to stop tweeting about his aldo shoe shopping habits and do something productive with his lifespace...

David Chase said...

I see you did not list Kanye? Ha!

OneChele said...

I actually follow both of them. But Oprah doesn't necessarily need my love and I'drather you just vote for Obama :-)

OneChele said...

He spends a lot of time tweeting about shoes and bags, doesn't he? Wow...

OneChele said...

Reggie Bush isn't bad, Percy Harvin, there are a few that tweet intelligently. But you know I cut pro athletes much slack.

OneChele said...

No and someone needs to take Twitter away from 50 cent.

baileyqc said...

I cannot even list the number of celebs I unfollowed because they are "not smart".
Sorry Chele, I unfollowed your boy Idris.

rozb said...

Um...woo this is hard. Hi - I'm RozB and I have never tweeted. Never even joined Twitter.

Is it easy to get up on there, or will I have to give up buttloads of personal information? I may just join...

OneChele said...

LOL! You don't have to tweet. But if you care to, just an email address is needed for info.

OneChele said...

Depends on what you use it for. It can be a complete time waster, the most irritating place you've ever visited, or chock full of insightful information... all at the same time. ;-)

Page Bartlett said...

I bet Donna Brazile just goes IN on folks

CaliGirlED said...

LOL I am so with you rozb! I just signed up a couple of weeks ago and am only connected with Chele and GAM. I'm still trying to figure it out, but I rarely go on. However I am going to see what these six are talking about. I LOVE Holly Robinson-Pete so that will be my first stop.

LikeLena said...

I have a Twitter account, I really only use it to reply on BnB :-), I should do more with it. I will definitely add these six though.

J B said...

And then there's OneChele--writer, football enthusiast, a life that rivals any soap opera script, bon vivant AND answers your tweets.

OneChele did not pay me for this endorsement.

CaliGirlED said...

LMAO @ "...take Twitter away from 50 cent."!!!

I joined Twitter on a whim but in the last few months, I've built all my clientele through Twitter. It's free advertising. Quickest word of mouth in the world.

Superwoman said...

so funny you posted this, a friend and i were literally just talking about celeb idiots on twitter, and how i flat our refuse to follow them because i don't like courting disappointment. THANK YOU for this list, especially the lovely daniel sunjata - i will follow him immediately!!

diamond life said...

Okay, I just peeked at these timelines - you are dead on. Not at all what I expected. Great list.

MeetCharlieL said...

Yeah, Cory Booker is the truth.
Have you tried following Toure? That guy...

The Fanny Pack said...

Kewl post.
Yep, @DanielSunjata is five types of yummy so your endorsement is enough to add him to the follow list!

For me, Allyson Felix (Track & Field Sprinter) is pleasant, Steve Martin and Joel Mchale are hilarious and Hill Harper is enlightened. Pre-Ochocinco, I tried following Chad Johnson...that didn't last long. Also, Taraji P. Henson is "real" and tweets back but dang if she doesn't fill up your timeline!

Off the "grid", I once met Tracy McGrady when he effectively kept me from falling down in a throng of ppl when my heel got wedged in the floor. Chivalrous athelete; who knew.

Pure Choco said...

I haven't joined Twitter yet. Everyone I know who has is now addicted!

Miz JJ said...

I tried a few rappers and even the "conscious" rappers made my teeth itch. I'm going to try out Holly R Peete and Daniel Sunjata.

HauteLikeMe said...

Holly Peete is a sweetheart. I tried following Alyssa Milano but that woman tweets about 400 times a day. It got to be a bit much.

OneChele said...

I lasted a week with Toure, he is a special kind of brother... and not in a good way. I also met him in person and feel no need to repeat the experience.

OneChele said...

LOL - Thank God I'm not a celebrity. I have enough transparency as it is.

OneChele said...

No apology needed. Some people you follow... just because.

Joy Andrews said...

OMG, Chele - you didn't warn us about the crazy that is Terry McMillan.
She should REALLY have a publicist handle her account. I mean REALLY.

OneChele said...

No comment, black authors united and whatnot
(But um, there's a BougieTale I could tell...)

OnlyMe said...

Are there other black writers you recommend we follow?

what happened? all of these intelligent folks and nobody talks about Lalah Hathaway. OMG! High five to OneChele for pointing her out to us. Lalah Hathaway is the daughter of Donny Hathaway, the great rhythm and blues singer. Everybody's heard his tune "Where Is the Love?" with Roberta Flack. He was one of the best voices of his time. He ruled the early 70's. He was the bomb. A friend of mine, Larry Fulcher (bass player) pointed out the greatness of Donny to me (I talk with Larry about the 20 CD's that he would take with him if he were stranded on an island and Donny Hathaway's These Songs for you, Live was one of his 20 - http://www.whereistheoutrage.net/wordpress/2009/12/12/the-errington-thompson-show-12-5-09/). If his daughter is half as great, she is well worth the time to sign up for her tweets.

@Reads4Pleasure has a great list I used to get started with writers. I'll see if I can get her to post the link.

I'm all up and through the Twitter. My S/O got me started and now claims I'm a Twitterholic. I can quit when I want to.

I follow Nicholas Kristoff, NYT writer, Roza Otunbayeva, President of Kyrgyzstan, Marc Colombo, Cowboys offensive linemen, Michael K Williams aka Omar, and two astronauts (some of the most breathtaking photos I've ever seen), Charles Oakley, Kevin Durant, Michael Smith ESPN writer, Tony Dungy, Keith Olbermann, Charles Blow NYT writer, and Toure.

I have to cosign Donna though. I feel like I get more than the warmed over mess they call news following her.

A must follow is Levar Burton aka Kunta. He definitely interacts with followers.

Had to unfollow Ochocinco and quite a few celebs. No personality, intelligence, wit.

I follow alot of regulah black folks and it's much better.

Tried Twitter a year ago. Just did not appeal to me, and I had a hard time trying to figure it out. Between FB, B & B,a few other blogs I follow and work, I figured I could do without it. Maybe I will try again. I do get messages saying that so and so is following me, and I just get a vision of some poor soul waiting for me to say something on there......LOL

Here's the list http://www.reads4pleasure.com/p/authors-of-color-online.html

Evansaw said...

Just went to Twitter site (thanks Chele) and it is totally different than it was the last time I was on there! God, I hope I don't get hooked on this too......

CaliGirlED said...

Do tell! LOL

CaliGirlED said...

TV One did a great story about him in their Unsung series.

Follow Melissa Harris Lacewell & David Pogue. You'll be glad for it. By the way, Twitter is excellent for news. Follow any local or national outlet for breaking stories.

I Loooooooooooooove Lalah Hathaway!!!!! Her album was all I listened to last year!!! She is also amazing when she performs live. Her CD's do not do her live performance justice, she is also fun and interacts with her crowd, she called me out last year the essence festival when I was waving my hand to fan myself. She said, girl that ain't going to do nothing for you, it's hotter than hell down here. That made my day!!!!! P.S. I do follow Keri Hilson's tweets, she is actually positive with her tweets!!!

MonP said...

The first time I joined twitter I couldn't figure out the purpose. After my intern convince me to give it another shot I use it networking and getting industry news. I've met some great folks in my industry and have even had unsolicited job offers based on my Twitter interactions. Most of my comments are about sports and the sports industry but I do have a list of commenters (including some from BougieLand) that I follow for their hilarious commentary.

There's also Twitter chats on various topics. Check out the schedule here...http://bit.ly/vArdq.

I like your list and already follow most of them. I like folks who engage and enrich and I will pick up those I don't follow currently. I have a couple more to add:
@JemeleHill ESPN writer who shares a lot about pop culture and what's happening with black folks as well as sports
@PressSec Verified account of Press Secretary Robert Gibbs Unfiltered tweets about what is happening with POTUS and the administration.
@chucktodd NBC News insight on all things political as well as the random sports tweet.

GrownAzzMan said...

50 should let someone do his tweeting for him...LOL

GrownAzzMan said...

Donna gives you the uncut version of what she says on tv and the occasional recipe...LOL A must-follow!

GrownAzzMan said...

Twitter is like golf. Addiction or avoidance. I don't know too many who are halfway about it.

GrownAzzMan said...

Alyssa does have much to say...

GammasWorld said...

I was hooked from my first tweet -- my FB profile says "I'm addicted to twitter" -- wanna reach me? Don't email -- tweet. LOL

You should also check out her book, When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost. Great book about reconciling a love of hip hop and feminism.
