Introducing a new recurring series today - The Tuesday Top Two - where we discuss the best two "fill in the blank" and why. Let's talk actors and actresses today. We have polls!
I think Denzel is at the top of his game right now. Someone tried to come at me with Will Smith but when I watch a Will Smith movie, I see Will Smith playing superhero. Will Smith playing fighter pilot. Maybe that's just me. For my next pick, probably Don Cheadle. What do you think?
As for actresses, this one really stumped me. Alfre Woodard isn't doing a ton of movies lately or she would make my list. Neither is Angela Bassett. Angelina Jolie has been playing a variation of the same character since Lara Croft. But Kimberly Elise and Kate Winslet would be my top two today.
So who gets your vote? And why? Do share...

I agree with Denzel, he's just untouchable right now. No Jamie Foxx votes?
I think Susan Sarandon is one of the best still working as well.
I'll come through and post the write-in votes later as well.
No love for Hustle and Flow dude? Yes, I'm joking.
I like the old school DeNiro/Pacino/Hoffman for the back in the day group. Whitaker and Cheadle killing right now. But I think it's telling that the more "popular" actresses Union, Aniston, Jolie - Are not considered the most talented. I need to see more from Taraji before signing off on her.
Who is this generation's Cicely Tyson?
I love polls! Russell Crowe is overrated, Don Cheadle underrated. I think Will Smith is a great entertainer not necessarily a great actor.
If you decide to do bottom two - please put Beyonce and Terrence Howard on that list :-)
In the men's category Denzel is the man, but also my fave actor right now is Anthony Mackie, whom I think will win an Oscar one day or at least get a nod. He's got a few projects coming up including a biopic of Jessie Owens.
And in the women's category Kimberly Elise. And also Sanaa Lathan, she's really been out of sight though. She's got a project coming with Phylicia Rashad and Ruby Dee.. I hope it's good.
I've yet to see anything form Gabrielle Union. She's kinda one-dimensional .
Chele - no Idris no Halle? I know, I know - they pretty but can they act? Really?
No one is close to holding Denzel's jock right now. He is our Poitier.
On the actress side... These young girls - maybe a Hilary Swank?
The thing is so many of the actors aren't getting big screen chances so they've moved to TV. Larry (Lawrence, Montana's daddy) Fishburne, Blair Underwood, Hill Harper, Gary Sinise, Jeff Goldblum - some of the better actors now on TV.
I agree that the actress category is hard to call. Angela Bassett and Chandra Wilson (Dr Miranda on Grey's) are the two that come to mind.
Johnny Depp?! Emma Thompson.
Matt Damon Julia Roberts
And yes Denzel and Angela.
Gerard Butler has definitely caught my eye as someone to watch. He was pretty good in 300, but he was amazing in Law Abiding Citizen. I didn't catch his movie with Jennifer Aniston, so I don't know how he is in a comedy. Russell Crowe overrated? Dude, he WAS John Nash in A Beautiful Mind AND Maximus in Gladiator. His personal life may overshadow his acting abilities sometimes, but I think he's pretty fantabulous.
As far as women, Kimberly Elise and that whole nose flaring thing she does is no bueno. Gabby Union is gorgeous, but she plays every role the same, much like Angela Bassett. And I'm not feeling Taraji as the next big thing either. If there is another Cicely on the way, we haven't seen her yet.
I think Halle is a good actress and Idris was fantastic in the Wire. He's kinda been the same character for the last few movies. What do you think of Columbus Short?
On the female side... oooh, the tv actresses are holding it down right now.
Cate Blanchett. George Clooney. Robert Downey Jr. Javier Bardem. Amy Adams. Brad Pitt.
I rebuke the person who wrote in Anthony Anderson as a Best Actor. Whoever you are - get out. I mean it.
LOL - NO! Someone just walked past me talking about what about Mo'Nique. I had to scream "Bay-bee NO!"
Will Smith was great in Ali and Happyness.
I think Thandie Newton is doing some interesting acting
And Kate Hudson when she isn't being all chick flicky
I thought Isaiah Washington had good acting chops before GreyGate.
TV is winning right now. Next Tuesday how about the best two comedies and dramas?
I have to rep for Jamie Foxx, he was brilliant in Ray - oh, you still mad about Booty Call? LOL!
Denzel for sure. Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman.
You wrong for "Montana's Daddy"
And for whoever wrote in Jessica Alba under best actress... Le Boo.
Hot yes, talented actress? I don't know about all that.
Actor - Denzel Washington and Forrest Whitaker
Actress - Viola Davis and Kimberly Elise
These actors/actresses make the characters beleivable. The viewer doesnt see the "acting".
I ain't mad about "Booty Call" but I will never get over Jamie's performance on the BET Awards last year. Bad, bad, bad. He'll never redeem himself in my eyes.
Viola - yes!
Plus Jarhead, Stealth, that rom-com with Gabby Union and Morris Chestnut - no Jamie. No.
So let me ask - Clooney and Pitt over Damon and Affleck?
No love for the Gyllenhaals? Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon?
Heath Ledger RIP
Ya'll are killing me with the write-ins. Steve Carrell - really? Best Actor in the US right now?
And whoever just emailed about the Baldwins vs the Barrymores - no.
I'll go ratchet - of the Rapping Actors Group (RAG) - who da best?
Queen La? Ice Cube? Ice-T? TI? Fitty? Luda? Eve?
LOL - of this group, I have to go Queen La and let's not forget Big Willie rapped for a minute.
Defintely
We don't have on unfortunately
Sanaa Lathan seems kinda one-dimensional to me, too.
Queen La and Luda.
DiCaprio has been on a good streak. The only dud recently is Shutter Island. Titanic, Catch me if you can, The Beach, Blood Diamond, The Departed, etc. I'll leave out the elephant in the room. Had to go Denzel, The Book of Eli, son! Son should have no less than 3 Oscars: X, Hurricane, John Q. That's off the top.
Actresses was more difficult. Streep is on her grind, but outside of her?
i can agree with on you denzel. dude is a beast. i saw book of eli recently. i slept on that movie. should have saw it in the movies. great debaters, training day, x, pelham 123, antwon fisher, remember the titans, he got game, the bone collector, philadelphia, mo better blues, pelican brief. these are just a few of my favorites. he has so many more movies. look at how diverse the characters are that he plays.
i didn't vote for the actresses. i don't know any actresses that are that dominant right now.
i forgot all about john q.
can you really count leonardo in the departed. it had an all star cast (jack nickolson and mark wahlberg). that's like chris bosh saying he's the man in miami playing next to dwade and lebron.
I do love Don Cheadle and Ejiofor Chiwitel. Ejiofor was in the movie "Talk to Me" with Don. Acting is simply divine from these two. I do have to say - that although I voted using those choices, these guys are worth a movie ticket.
As for the women, they all play the same character in different movies. However, Whoopi (yes, I said "Whoopi") has been multi-dimensional. She was different from Celie to a nun (hated it), to a psychic in Ghost (hated it more), and even another character in a few other movies. Hell - she could probably get away with being a White woman in a movie. Hate her if you want, but she is a good actress. There. I said it...
So far, these are the write in actresses: Angelina Jolie, Reese Witherspoon, Diane Lane, Viola Davis, Kimberly Elise, Susan Sarandon, Sanaa Lathan, Jessica Alba, Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry, Julia Roberts, Alfre Woodard, Loretta Devine
These are the write-in votes for actor so far: Don Cheadle (10 votes), Steve Carrell, Gerald Butler, Anthony Anderson, Mykelti Washington, Johnny Depp (2 votes), Will Smith, Anthony Mackie, Robert DeNiro
Don Cheadle should be on the list...he is extremely talented and we have yet to see the best out of him. Definitely an untapped talent in Hollywood. He commits to a role 110%!
I like Jeffrey Wright--didnt see him mentioned. Ejiofor Chiwitel and Don Cheadle are really good too. female actresses I'm drawing a blank on any one at the top but I love Meryl, Penelope Cruz, Julia Roberts, Kate Winslett. I can see Dakota Flanning and Ellen Page coming up as the young stars transitioning into adult roles.
I disagree she's proven she can play dramatic well, she's just not given the opportunity so much.
Yes!! to whomever mentioned Jefferey Wright. He's phenomenal!!!
Dicaprio lost me when he kept losing his accent in Blood Diamonds....
For actors, I pick Leo DiCaprio (probably because I saw Inception last night and it was incredible! Go see it!). For actresses, I would definitely pick Meryl Streep and Viola Davis<---I'm surprised she wasn't on the list.
chiwetel ejiofor - he is generally great, but he was EVERYTHING, and i mean EVERYTHING in 'Dirty, Pretty Things'...one of the most underrated movies ever...
Forrest Whittaker is an amazing talent, as is Don Cheadles. Denzel is just legend, let's leave it at that, shall we...
i'm disappointed in myself, i cannot think of many women at all - Marion Cotillard was phenon as Edith Piaf - she's a REAL actor!! i also really love cate blanchett....WHY can't i think of any black women whose acting i really, really admire?!?! aaargh, it's driving me batty!! *thinking, thinking* .... will kep thinking...
YES!! i have such a massive crush on jeffrey wright, the man i'm with actually got my attention coz he reminded me of him! *he still looks at me strangely when i tell him that....*
Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. I love Brad in anything, and Matt was good in Good Will Hunting and Ocean's 11.
I agree about Whoopi. Say what you want but the woman is talented!
Pretty good write-ins. Just watched Jungle Fever the other night, Halle Berry and Samuel L. Jackson were some believeable crack heads! (Was that the poor version of Bobby and Whitney?)...Ok that was wrong! But I couldn't resist, hehehe.
Don Cheadle is TALENTED! Love Robert DeNiro, which brings to mind Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino.
Yeah we always sleep on Jeffrey, but he is a very good actor. Julia Roberts? LOVE her! (Pretty Woman and Erin Brokovich, two of my favorites.) That's why I don't like saying who are my favorite or the best, cause I always forget about someone. LOL
I like him too.
Viola Davis, Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett are a few of my favs! Viola is hot right now, just won a Tony for Fences. Anika Noni Rose is another favortie of mine.
Don Cheadle, Denzel, Chiwetel Etiofor are hot. I LOVE Ralph Fiennes and have been under his spell since the English Patient! Whew!! Colin Firth is also really good as is Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
Added to the lists: Jeffrey Wright, Ed Norton, Jeff Bridges, Sean Penn, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matt Damon and Ryan Gosling
Added to the actress side: Scarlett Johansson, Rachel McAdams, and Sophie Okenodo
yeah I really enjoyed Dirty Pretty Things.
Let me see: Don Cheadle (i remember seeing him in Colors; i'm so happy he moved on up), Chiwetel Ejiofor,Leonardo DiCaprio, Anthony Hopkins, Joe Pesci, Orlando Bloom, Jhonny Depp, etc.
Women: Julia Roberts (love her), Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Angela Bassett, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, etc. (gosh I can't remember..I'm bad with names) :)
Outside of Jack, he was the best on screen. Sure there was Damon, Jack,
Alec, Martin, and Wahlberg, but he more than held his own.
Strong cast generally make good movies, Anaconda notwithstanding.
