Random Bouge - RIP Aaliyah, Spike, Ebonics, Mexico and more

Bougie Confession... I got nothing today. Nada. Zip. Goose Egg. And my brain is not cooperating. You know what that means... it's Random Thought day on BnB.

1. I stayed up into the wee hours of the night to watch the entire If God is Willing and da Creek Don't Rise documentary on HBO. Spike Lee, I believe, has truly found his voice with this series. I found myself elated, saddened and left frustrated by what was shown. I don't know what the answer for New Orleans is - but someone has got to do better than this.

2. Since Raylene and Tariq messed up There Goes My Baby for me, I had to get a new theme song. Currently rolling with Donell Jones' new cut: Love Like This.

3. Next in my WDDDA files: Tourists in Mexico want to experience an illegal border crossing, visit slums and take a human trafficking tour. No shade, but I will guaran-damn-tee none of those tourists are of African descent. We have no desire to pretend to break for freedom or get sold into slavery. :-/ It's all fun and games until some blonde girl gets kidnapped for real. Idiots.

4. How cute are the Obamas on date night?

5. RIP Aaliyah - I was such a fan. And I believe the Ciara/Rihanna/Letoyas are poor (very poor) imitations. Yeah I said it. Lord knows she was one of the few who knew how to be sexy without coming across skanky. And she could actually sing. Rest in Peace, Baby Girl. A little flashback with Rock the Boat:

6. Last but not least: Ebonics is NOT a language. I don't care what anyone tries to tell me. I call bullshiggity. So all those years learning Spanish, French and Italian were a waste, huh? I guess I should have minored in AAVE. Check this from MSNBC:
Federal agents are seeking to hire Ebonics translators to help interpret wiretapped conversations involving targets of undercover drug investigations.
The Drug Enforcement Administration recently sent memos asking companies that provide translation services to help it find nine translators in the Southeast who are fluent in Ebonics, Special Agent Michael Sanders said Monday.
Ebonics, which is also known as African American Vernacular English, has been described by the psychologist who coined the term as the combination of English vocabulary with African language structure.
Some DEA agents already help translate Ebonics, Sanders said. But he said wasn't sure if the agency has ever hired outside Ebonics experts as contractors.
Any comments, thoughts, random insights of your own to share?

In every Bougie post the is at least one gem. This is what I am taking with me today. "It's all fun and games until some blonde girl gets kidnapped for real. Idiots!" LMBAO!

Ebonics may not be a language, but it is a dialect... like different regions have dialects... Even the languages that you cite DO have dialects...

I was a HUGE Aaliyah fan. And that Donell song is the truth. Good looking out.

You know that Ebonics shiggity is like that Yo Black article you wrote - it's like we're some sort scientific experiment to dissect and now our "language"? Arrgh.
Michelle O is too cute in that dress.

I had such a crush on Aaliyah back in the day. They on some bullshit with that Ebonics.
I have Spike doc dvr'd, I'll take a look this weekend.

MochaMuffin said...

I don't think "Ebonics" is one dialect. Usually, you can define a dialect by a region like "Southern" or "Bostonian", you can't do that with "Ebonics."

Dr. Peppa said...

I watched Spike's doc - wow, that was rough. I don't know whether someone in New Orleans made a deal with the devil and now they are paying it back or what but that region just goes through hell.

Oh wow, Donnell Jones is still alive? Loved him back in the day.

Word on Aaliyah. She was muy muy classy.

LMAO @ the Ebonics guns for hire. So sad though. Do they ever hire interpreters for rednecks so they can be understood too? I assume that would be a no....

Oh and in other news, Elin Nordegren is coming out with her own side of the story (People Magazine). Le sigh. Why can't homegirl just take the money she's entitled to from the divorce and head off into the sunset? Why talk about her side especially when she's been labeled the wronged party/victim? *rolls eyes* I guess you can tell I have issues with this whole image of her being the Patron Saint of Wronged Trophy Wives (term borrowed from The Black Snob's post....hehe)

Very cool "random" stuff. The Donell song is nice. Obamas are always cute.
WTH with that Mexico thing?

Yeah, I don't know how I feel about "Woe is me" tour. It's not hittin' me the right way.

She needs to go sit down. Seriously. Plus, no matter what Tiger is calling himself racially - I don't like the component of the victimized blonde woman done wrong by the mean black man.
Also, is she seriously trying to tell us she had ZERO clue. I don't buy it. Not at all. Most women know what they've got.

I try. :-)

I am really liking the Donnell Jones song, I always liked him. However, I find that the older I get (I'm 31) the less I am attracted to men who dress as he does, baggy jeans, shades indoors, hat turned to the side, etc. That was cute when I was 20, I even dated a guy in college who had a very colorful assortment of do rags (he would color coordinate with his outfits... really) but now. Oh. But. No!!!!! Give me a man with Dockers and loafers any day!!!!! That is my two cents, just had to share (and ramble). I always live the Obama's and Aaliyah is always sad to me, we are the same age, I remember when she died, I had just moved to New York and started my graduate program, in fact I heard the news the very first night I spent in the dorms. So sad, seemed like everyone was calling everyone. RIP Aaliyah!!!! <3

*I always love the Obama's.

Nice song from Donell. Oh, Aaliyah - yes, all these chicks are Aaliyah-wannabes. There was only one.

*Ratchetness advocate alert*

As much as I have self debates about the veracity of Ebonics/AAVE as a legitimate dialect of the English language, if I resided in the A I would gladly take that guap and then go buy some Luda, Kast, Gucci, Waka so I could be ready on the first day. Best believe.

This is akin to them droppin 65K-70K on a table and askin, "Who want it?" I's does! Betta get that paper, son!

As for Aaliyah, it's just hard to believe that it's been 9 years already.

Comment of the day! LOL

Yessir! Plus, they won't have a clue what I'm translating - "Pookie and his friends are going to attempt to evade arrest this evening by staying indoors"

I'm reminded of the joke in the classic comedy Airplane! Where old girl is like, "Yes, I speak jive."

GammasWorld said...

Props on the new theme song. I don't think Ebonics is a language either but if these fools wanna pay me $80K to translate I'll sho nuf translate ... but you younguns would have to help me (Gamma don't have a clue). People going to Mexico for the "experience" of crossing illegally obviously have more money than sense.

It's the A-A-I-L-Y-A-H!!!

The teacher in me is annoyed by Ebonics, BUT my degree in Communication and Culture says that Ebonics is in fact a language. The definition of language is a system of signs (symbols, icons, etc) for encoding and decoding information. Ebonics does that.

And she was trying to downplay the whole golf club thing. She wanted to see if he was okay after he crashed, but why the golf club? Clearly, it was to tap on the window to see if he was alright. She knew, and had this whole shibacle stayed quiet, she would have stayed home and just let it go. Plus, we all know that Tiger was not that clever to keep juggling all those balls (pun intended).

She is now living her life and Tiger will move on to the next Hooters girl or "hostess". Ick.

I tell you... some people... illegal border crossing? SMDH. Loves me some Donell. Not a big Aliyah fan, but like the fact that she didn't have to be half nekked (damn-is that ebonics?) to sell records. I think that was the initial thought process behind Rhianna, LeToya, &Ciara, but it didn't sell ( I once heard a radio host call Ciara a "fake" Aliyah to her face). I do hate the fact that she's gone though. I love the Obama's (not feeling the dress though). Don't have HBO. gonna have to ambush someone with it this weekend.

GTFOH, WTF, OMG!!!??? Where do you find these things?

The Drug Enforcement Administration recently sent memos asking companies that provide translation services to help it find nine translators in the Southeast who are fluent in Ebonics, Special Agent Michael Sanders said Monday.

Umm is it because I'm black or grew up in a lot of 'hoods' that this is complete nonsense to me? Ebonics is not Spanish, German, Italian or Latin. It. Is. Not. That. Serious. They need translators, seriously? What the Boondocks, a season of The Wire, 106 & Park, ATL, Baby Boy or maybe they should pull their heads out of their asses and they might be able to understand the words that are coming out of these drugdealers mouths. "Ya mean son, yo these cats is illin' right now, straight set trippin', dey betta check dey self befo they wreck dey self, hear wut I'm sayin' son?" Do they need a translator for that?

Tourists in Mexico want to experience an illegal border crossing, visit slums and take a human trafficking tour.
Ahhh, NO!

I love your rants, they make me rant. What are people thinking nowadays?

Myas-mom said...

I'm just trying to figure out why it took 19 hours over 4 days to complete the interview! Hell the interview is almost longer than the life of the marriage! SMDH

Myas-mom said...

Yes that scene was funny! Who knew one day, it would actually come to this?

Myas-mom said...

You are so a teacher! LOL!!! Teach girl!

Myas-mom said...

Love the Obamas, love their love.
I so miss Aaliyah! She was about to take it to another level with her acting.
Ebonics - This comedian on the radio said the drug dealers better make good wit dey baby mommas so that they don't go work for the DEA!

Jeanprouttjones said...

As far as Ebonics is concerned. The powers that be would like to establish Ebonics as an official language. This would allow them to include it as a language other than English, so that when state questions show up on ballots this year in November concerning "English Only" and Voter I.D.; the chances of limiting people of color from voting will be stronger. No more of this Obama stuff!
The powers would like to make sure that the majority "Status Quo" remains the same.

Asada said...

Yes, you DO need a translator for that.

I suspect, the sentence is a warning that someone is gonna get hurt (perhaps shot) if they are not careful.

But what does "illin" mean? Being stupid? Doing wrong? What is "set tripping"? Do they Keep doing the wrong things!? Does "cats" refer specifically to drug dealers, or any black man ( or woman)? Or is it just any person who is "hood"?

Fo realz, wat dis mean!?

Lady4Real said...

No there is no need for a translator, there are nouns in the sentence & context clues, use common sense & you can't go wrong.
