Remember the Time?

Michael Jackson was a huge (I mean huge) part of my childhood and actually the soundtrack to a lot of my life. The BougieSiblings and I used to line up with two of our BougieCousins and dance it out. There were times when my musical tastes were vastly divergent from my parents but I could always put on some Michael Jackson and everybody was happy. We used to watch Michael Jackson video debuts as a family. We watched his Grammy performances as Must-See-TV. The last concert all of the BougieSiblings attended together was the Jacksons Victory Tour. We were also all huddled around a TV in Atlanta for BougieOlderBro's graduation from Emory University when Motown's 25th Anniversary Special aired. There was this one moment in Los Angeles when me and the ex-SO put Break of Dawn on repeat… but let's move on. The point is, there are a lot of really great memories associated with Michael Jackson's music for me.

One year ago, we heard the shocking news that Michael Jackson had passed away. Who can believe it's been one year? I wrote a whole bunch of stuff that no one read (I was a newbie blogger) about my MJ love. I've always been one to celebrate the music instead of eulogizing the man. So today, a special edition of Five Questions, Five Answers:

Name your top two Michael Jackson songs: Stranger in Moscow and Lady in my Life if really pressed.

Name your favorite Michael Jackson video: Smooth Criminal

Be honest, back in the day, Purple Rain or Thriller: I'll admit I was really all about Purple Rain though Thriller had the better videos. They both have stood the test of time. Still sound good today.

Did you/do you own glitter socks, sparkle glove, Thriller jacket or black penny loafers? I had black penny loafers because I was that preppy chick. I tried to get the sparkle socks but BougieMom was not having it.

Where were you when you heard that Michael Jackson died? I was exactly where I am now, in my home office polishing the manuscript for Heard It All Before. I admit to thinking it was hoax for a while.

Bonus Question: Who is out in the music game that reminds you of Michael Jackson (in scope of talent and influence)? I honestly cannot think of anyone.

Your turn:
  • Top 2 MJ songs?
  • Best MJ Video?
  • Purple Rain or Thriller?
  • Did you/do you own glitter socks, sparkle glove, Thriller jacket or black penny lofers?
  • Where were you when you heard that Michael Jackson died?
  • Who is the "next" up & coming MJ?
RIP Michael, your musical legacy reigns forever.

2. Best MJ Video- tough one, Remember the time
3. Purple Rain
4. Nope
5. On my way home from work.
6. Usher & Chris Brown comes close, but they are still lacking on the creativity and visionary side of things.

1. "Human Nature" and "Another Part of Me" (Lord that's not a fair question... it's MJ)

2. Hands down "Remember the Time," but "Black or White" gets an honorable mention

3. Thriller -- seriously. However, on a slightly different note, I think "Off the Wall" is MJ's best album.

4. None of that, though I probably woulda messed with a glittery glove...

5. I was at work. I remember having quite the intense discussion with coworkers about whether or not we could believe TMZ when CNN, Fox and MSNBC were all still reporting that he was in the hospital...

Bonus: I hate to be cliche, but there won't be another MJ. New artists don't have the passion for good music that MJ (and Prince, and others of that era) had. They have passion for #1 singles and money -- those are two different things. It's ironic, though, that MJ made a boatload (and is STILL making a boatload -- $1B since he died...) because he cared so much about giving his fans his best. There's just not anyone out who cares that much, imo.

2. "Scream" because I stan HARD for Janet. That video is epic to me.
3. Thriller. I've never been much for Prince. I recognize his genius, but I connected more w/ the Jacksons.
4. None of the above.
5. I was at my aunt's house playing w/ my younger cousins. My best friend texted me that MJ had passed & I told her she was a liar. She told me to turn on CNN. The entire house quieted as we watched the coverage.

Who is the "next" up & coming MJ?
Not sure we will see an artist on that level in our lifetime. Maybe in another 100 years or so. . .

My brain isn't working this morning so I'm not going to try and answer the questions. Reading this did bring up the memory of the last boyfriend and his little 9 yr old nephew dancing to MJ in the crowded living room. You know twenty or fifty years from now people are still going to be trying to dance like MJ.

Top 2 MJ songs? : Human Nature & I Wanna Be Where You Are

Best MJ Video?: Remember The Time

Purple Rain or Thriller? Thriller as a youth,I was too young to be into Prince real heavy

Did you/do you own glitter socks, sparkle glove, Thriller jacket or black penny loafers?--I didn't but I wish I did.

Where were you when you heard that Michael Jackson died? I had just got home from grocery shopping, saw it on CNN while putting the food away

Who is the "next" up & coming MJ? I thought it may have been Chris Brown before the beatdown (just as a pop force and dancing; not an icon). Now, nobody...

1. Black or White and Remember the Time

2. Black or White

3. Purple Rain, because Thriller scared the shizzle out of me as a kid. I think it still does--I
proudly claim it as my phobia.

4. No, I'm too young for that fad.

5. Studying abroad in Toledo, Spain. That was just about the only US news that made it there.

Bonus: No one, though at one point Usher and Chris Brown were fighting over the "#1 Imitator" crown.

Top 2 MJ songs? I'll be there and I want you back. I know these are both Jackson Five but really the old school Michael was my favorite.
Best MJ Video? Far and away, Smooth Criminal
Purple Rain or Thriller? Thiller, for some reason I've never really had the Prince vibe
Did you/do you own glitter socks, sparkle glove, Thriller jacket or black penny loafers? Hmm, well I'm a preppy one like my sister, I had the Black Penny Loafers (for years!)

1) Top two fave Michael songs: Remember the Time and Rock with You (When you feel that heat/And we can ride the boogie/Share that beat of looooooove!)

2) Fave Michael video: Thriller. When I was a kid, it was my favorite pleasure and torture (still gives me the creeps). Runner up: Remember the Time

3) Purple Rain or Thriller: Thriller all day! Never even seen Purple Rain or heard the whole song (don't judge me) and I only began to appreciate Prince's genius towards the end of high school (I'm 24, mind you).

4) Own any Michael fan apparel: Nope, can't say I ever did.

5) Where were you when: I was at work, in the newsroom. We were all going insane trying to confirm whether he was dead, debating whether TMZ could be trusted. I found it on LA Times website (before it crashed) and we posted it online. I was just numb. We crowded around the TVs watching CNN...I cried the rest of the day.

No, absolutely not, there is no one who could fill Michael's shoes. Some people have a glimmer of potential, but lack the creativity and the drive. Michael was the king, he knew it, everyone else knew it, but he didn't walk around saying it and remained humble. Artists like Usher, Chris Brown, they strive to be the king, but have to much ego and too little work ethic to pull it off.

Gosh, I only get to pick 2 songs?!?! Ok, if I had to pick two, it's "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Human Nature". Best MJ video? Hands down, "Thriller", but "Remember the Time" gets honorable mention. Since I'll be a Prince fan til the day I die, I have to go with "Purple Rain", even though I couldn't have been more than 1 or 2 when they first came out. :) I never owned any MJ memorobilia, but I had some black loafers just 'cause that's the type of girl I am! I was driving to Bowie, MD listening to the Michael Baisden show when he annouced that MJ had died. I didn't believe it, either, especially since the only other source announcing it at the time time was TMZ. I don't think there is a next MJ. There's only one, and sadly he's no longer with us. I think there are a lot of guys that have great talent, but they will never have the same effect that Michael had.

1) Off The Wall and Startin Somethin

2) Black/White (when it came out, it was cutting edge, I think)

3) Oooh...is that even a fair question?! Dang. Uhhh...sorry, Mike...Purple Rain

4) I had a poster on my closet door that I kissed every single night. Loafers and some make believe they were sparkly gloves.

5) On my way home from work. Did not believe it. Glad I was not driving. Stopped at my parents' house and was completely floored.

6) As for right now, I can't say that I know of anyone, but truthfully, I hope that there are still people with the magnitude of talent and love for art, music, and people to reach Michael's status and beyond...but I hope they have a more centered and happier existence than dear Michael did. My heart still breaks for that man. He will be missed forever.

1. PYT and Butterflies
2. Remember the Time
3. Purple Rain
4. no, didn't do the glove, loafers, sock thing... but seriously wanted a red leather beat it jacket
5. in the car on my way to the grocery store
6. i can't think of anyone who is as prolific and consistent as MJ in music but as far as dancing, I think Usher is close.

ooh, i love this whole concept!
1. top two songs? "get on the floor" and "man in the mirror" (when i was a kid, i alternated between mike singing man in the mirror on the single cassette in my walkman, and prince's kiss on my pink record player)
2. best video? i say BEST video period, "bad" extended version. oh my gosh, he was just so beautiful in that also.
3. purple rain or thriller? i was born the year purple rain came out, and i LOVE "let's go crazy", "purple rain" and "i would die for u"......but i also love mike's "lady in my life".....so i call a truce and say both
4. location? i was in my social psych class
5. next MJ? michael jordan.....there isn't one. and there won't be. i think everyone starts their careers out from the perspective of achievement- they expect to succeed. michael (and in my opinion all of the legends of his caliber), came from a place that was very much so organic and hardworking; they did it for the love and necessity of doing and being. there may have been some awesome people come up after him, but they won't ever be what he was, which is unmatched and legendary.

Jasmin said...

I LOVE Butterflies, but I didn't vote for it since I like Floetry's original better. :-)

1. I love PYT and Man in the Mirror but I love watching people dance to Break of Dawn (hell everything is in my car).
2. Duh, Thriller without a doubt.
3. Ok, see Purple had music galore and Thriller was 5 thrilling minutes. I'll have to give Prince this one.
4. I had a poor mans Thriller jacket (hated it) and you damn right I rocked those penny loafers.
5. I was at the laundromat and a woman came in crying saying he was died. We all turned the tv on and sat there in amazement. Phones started ringing while we were trying to confirm the news. She had her cousin who lived in LA on the phone and he was saying the news had confirmed it and then finally after what seemed like forever the news did too. I got into my car to hear the music and see folks crying in their cars shaking their heads. I came home took a minute to reflect and then turned the tv on to find his videos on every channel. It still give me goose bumps thinking about his death, I even get a little weepy.
6. No one can even closely replace MJ or attempt to walk in his shoes. I don't think there is anyone out there that is this huge nor do I think anyone can really attain the status he did.
