Sunday Good News Story: Kudos for Katie - Notre Dame's first African American Valedictorian

I am amazed (and not amused) that we are STILL having African American firsts in 2010 and yet here we are. Meet Katie Washington, the first black valedictorian in Notre Dame's 161-year history. Ms. Washington tells msnbc she's shocked and surprised by the honor, and intends to go on to earn her M.D. and Ph.D.

Congratulations to Ms. Washington, looking forward to the day when it's not news but a regular expectation. Enjoy your Sunday.

Thanks for writing about this! I go to school with Katie, and we are all very proud of her. Unfortunately, most of the White undergraduate community doesn't seem to realize the significance of this year. (You know we had Obama last year, so they are probably still smarting...)

What do you mean they don't see the significance of the year? As in: they don't think it matters that never before has there been a black val? Or as in: they don't think 161 year is too long to wait? Lol I went to hs with a bunch of white girls that go to ND now...I want to mention k washington to them and see what they think, but I worry that it won't go over well.

I love the good news story. Always gives me something uplifting to kick off the week

I've only heard alumni and non-White students express any interest. The cynical part of me feels like a lot of people are pretending like nothing's happened--even ND released some BS statement about "not keeping track of the race of their valedictorians".

Nothing like feel good news stories to kick off a week. This makes me proud and I wish my elders were alive to see this.

I guess that's not surprising :/ It seems like in this new "colorblind society" race only matters when a minority is living down to stereotypes. Oh well, nothing we can do about those folks. I was ecstatic to hear about Katie and it's so cool that you're experiencing that excitement firsthand!
