What do Dwayne Wayne, Keith Sweat and CBreezy have in common? Begging: The Good, the Bad and The Ugly

"If begging should unfortunately be thy lot, knock at the large gates only" ~Arabian proverb

I'm not a big fan of begging. It's a desperation move and it rarely works. Hence my dislike of Keith Sweat, he not only begged but added the whining which is all around a bad look. But then again, if you could craft up one really great plea to get what you want… uh, no - I still don't know if I could do it. (Yes, yes – pride goeth before a fall) Okay, it depends on what I was begging for… the life of a loved one, probably. My last dime? Probably not. Someone to stay with me/come back to me? Heckie naw. In the past few days, I've had occasion to witness begging at different levels. Take a look and tell me what you think…

The Good: Saturday night, thanks to Thembi of What Would Thembi Do, I had occasion to participate in live tweeting my favorite episode of A Different World. It was the episode where Dwayne finally grows a pair and breaks up Whitley's wedding to Byron. First, it's a really fun two-parter lampooning bougie excess. Second, there are some of the best guest appearances ever: Joe Morton, Orlando Jones, Ron O'Neal, Michael Warren, Gary Dourdan as the ever fine Shazza Zulu. Basically, this was hands down one of the best written/acted sit-com sequences of all time.

Completely depending on both comedic and dramatic timing and delivery, you move one word or chance one character's inflection and this scene wouldn't work. Great script and brilliantly actied. Anyway, witness the magnificence of Dwayne's begging around the four-minute mark.

How much do we love Diahann Carroll? "Die. just.. die!" <<>

The Bad: Bow-Tied Boy Wonder, otherwise known as CBreezy or Chris Brown broke off some begging of his own last week. Check it out from Yahoo:

The 20-year-old singer-dancer, who plead guilty to felony assault and is on probation for five years, recorded an audio message Wednesday on Say Now asking his fans to "bring [him] back." A humbled Brown said he needs his fans' help. "Some radio stations aren't playing my records," he said. "They're not being that supportive and I wouldn't expect them to. But it's on the fans...It's in your power to bring me back."

Brown said he is doing everything he can do. He refers to himself as a "better person" and said he is doing his music for the love, but added that his career is in jeopardy.

"It won't be possible for me to be an artist if I don't have support from people who give me an artist outlet," Brown said. "I can't be an underground mixtape artist."

I tried (for a minute) to feel bad for him but may I suggest he enroll in college with what's left of his dollars, get himself a degree and a profession that does not require people to like you? Cuz right now, they just don't CBreezy. They really, really don't.

The Ugly: A friend of mine, John recently split with his girlfriend of three years. So I can now be free to say… I never liked her. She was brash and loud (instead of being bold and outgoing), she was flashy (instead of having sparkle), and she was a little too familiar with a tendency to overshare intimacies (instead of being warm and inviting). In short, she was just a little bit too much of everything. But John swore we weren't seeing her at her best. {surreptitious side-eye}

Last week (post-break-up), she sat outside of his house (in the rain) waiting for him to come home. Upon his arrival, he invited her in. She proceeded to cry, whine, beg and shout for an hour before he got her back outside the door. She sat outside for another few hours (we're not sure how long she sat there, he went to sleep) waiting for him to open up and re-consider. When this tactic did not work, she took to showing up wherever she knew he was going to be and shouting at him, "You know you still want me! Just take me back and get it over with! Please! Don't you know how much I love you!?" The only reason I know this to be true is because he started videotaping her from his iPhone and sending it to me (and the police). If I wasn't afraid that she would show up here with the crazy, I would upload it and share it. It's quite frightening and ugly. And I have to wonder – does she really think all of that will work?! What about "mental breakdown stalker" equals "oh I should take her back"?

So I ask BougieLand… Is there anything you would beg for? Don't you miss A Different World (especially since they haven't replaced it)? Is it that we don't forgive Chris Brown or does his new album just suck? Inquiring minds want to know. Thoughts, comments, insights?

OH you just made my day with this clip of A Different World!!! Hands down one of my most favorite episodes!
As for the other three examples, how dreadful, and pitiful, especially Chris Breezy. Your friends girl should be oscar nominated, drama, drama, drama.

Chele... at some point... there needs to be a discussion about crazy women. I've got stories for days... and just when I think I've seen it all somebody shows up and shows out. Lord bless it.

Right now I'm begging God to give me back my hour or ffwd me to Friday. Either/or... either/or....

Um, like you said (and I RT'd) on Twitter. Dwayne had that begging thing down right. I woulda said yes just.on.GP (their history aside). Gosh I loved ADW. I need them to put the rest out on DVD. I honestly don't want the seasons with Lisa Bonet. LOL. #noshade

It's that we don't care about CB. Dude's not even in the news anymore for anything. At this point his desperation is showing and it's ugly. I've been begging this dude to get new PR people because they just can't get right. Whatever -- he needs to wait. This is the way it goes. You mess up, you spend some time out of the spotlight. Either by choice or by force. He obviously wants to be forced.

Begging is so not attractive and no one should do it. Begging means you are desperate and no one shoul dbe that desperate. Heck yeah I miss Different World, I wish BET would play reruns. I am just a fraid if they made another one it would look more like that crap "College Hill" and then I'd never watch. Chris cd was ok, I just think people have moved on beyond him.

wowzers at the ugly. to quote my boo Method Man "I don't beg for nothing but your pardon". LMAO

I just can't do it.

I do feel bad for Chris Brown though. I bought Graffiti, its a good CD. but these are the breaks...

Man's World said...

Chris Brown needed a longer break from the spotlight. He does need to go to school o r somewhere else for about four years and then try to come back... humbled.
For the record, your boy sounds like he's in restraining order territory
I would think in the age of Obama we could get a Different World-like sitcom on the air... jeez.

And I keep looking at him like - she was this over the top DURING the relationship, you thought she'd pull back now?!

OneChele said...

Let's just be truthful, the Lisa Bonet episodes were quite terrible.
And alright, I do plead with God on regular, regular basis and yet... he still has not blessed me with patience and tolerance for ignorance.
Speaking of ignorance, CBreezy. He needs better people and he needs to step back a minute (or a year or tw0)
I was going to go in on crazy chicks but the sisterhood is catching so much shade these days, I'll wait.

Thanks for the shout out! I had a blast watching the show with everyone (I pretty much do it every night lol).
There's something about Dwaynes begging, because it was so earnest and urgent and true and for both of their benefit, that takes it to a new level. Chris Brown is just selfish and needs to sit down.

Did you see the twitpic of the girl who tatt'd her love for CBreezy on her wrist?!?! LORD BLESS THESE CHILDREN, PLEASE.

I'ma stop begging God to get me to Friday and beg him to help.these.children

And you, per the usu, are absolutely right on the assault on the sisterhood as of late. We surely don't need to add to it right now.

The re-runs are on TV One every night. I would not count on BET to do the right thing (ever)... Le Sigh

OneChele said...

And this would be the difference. When it is someone you care about begging for something you co-sign... hmm that's something altogether acceptable. For instance, allow me to quote Darius Lovehall from Love Jones - This here, right now, at this very moment, is all that matters to me. I love you. That's urgent like a m*f*
Hey, have we seen characters like Dwayne and Darius in the new millennium? Just wondering.

JaymeC said...

Oh... Darius Lovehall! I need to watch that again. But to add on... when it's the right man/woman begging you for the right thing... you move mountains to make it happen. As for the rest (the bad and the ugly) - hot mess.

OneChele said...

The Hell? Like she's going to be a grandma one day still reppin' for CBreezy? *old school teeth sucking* these kids today...

Mr. Skyywalker said...

Let me be for real and go Temptations on you... I ain't too proud to beg. I went all Dwayne Wayne to get the future Mrs. Skyy back. I gibbadam - thug to the side, I did what I had to do to put a ring on it...

OneChele said...

I love a good Method Man shout-out!

You are taking me to another place with the Love Jones quote. *fanning self* Okay!

The Good: Much like everyone else, that episode is my FAVORITE!!! I had planned on watching it Saturday but I was actually out of the house (a rarity) so I did what any sensible person would...I DVR'd it and watched it the next day, lol. That was meaningful begging right there...

The Bad: I was never a fan of CB, so his begging was directed at me, lol...but I've been trying to understand what his PR people are being paid for because they dropped the ball and let it roll down the hill...he could have came back from this if it had been handled differently...ah well *shrug*

The Ugly: I was just talking about the "crazy" chick issue this weekend with friends...I just smh at it all 'cause if he/she doesn't want you back, there's no point in begging and going stalker...I got a story to tell, but it's not mine to tell so I'll keep my mouth shut, lol...

beautifulcurare said...

That's one of the best quotes ever...

Violet Rose said...

Points for proper use of "gibbadam" - LOL! Get yo' fiancee boo!

I don't beg bitches. Bitches beg me.

Brown Babe said...

CRAZY!!! As I was reading the post I was thinking about this quote from one of my all time fave movies...I like my begging with a healthy dose (not overdose) of cocky ala Darius Lovehall. There is something dramatically different about the pitiful begging and whining of Keith & Chris and the purposeful, putting my love & pride on the line to go get my woman of Dwayne and Darius - IMHO.

oh Riley You've been saving your little comment for such a time as this, haven't you? Muffin...sunshine...baby boo...I hope where ever you work, assuming you're employed, has a good mental health component in its insurance plan. You might want to make use of therapy sooner than later.

I was just reminded of Toyota's begging in their new commercial. They can be lumped in with CBreezy.

HauteLikeMe said...

Boy get you some Jesus. I'll BEG you to do that.

OneChele said...

Yeah they can. It's the "too little, too late" category.

datdudeincali said...

For that one right woman, a brother would beg a little. You can't beat the impassioned plea. And let's just be real. Women shouldn't have to beg. Just smile and crook a finger... somebody coming.

Your President in on TV begging right now.

OneChele said...

Presidents don't beg, they entreat with purpose. Recognize nuance.

First of all, great title on this post.
Gary Dourdan as Shazza was my first crush. But I had love left over for Dwayne.
When I was sixteen I vividly recall begging ym first boyfriend not to break up with me until after Homecoming. He broke up with me AT the dance in front of everybody. Lesson Learned - no more begging.
Your friend picked a bad one. I call Stalker Alert.
Chris Brown needs Jesus and two years out of the spotlight.

Reecie said...

that Darius quote is exactly what I thought of when Thembi typed "urgent". I love it!

I am sad to say I had to beg for forgiveness once. It wasn't pretty but I had to do it - I was so very out of hand. Thing is when you beg for forgiveness, you should beg them to forget also.

Grace said...

Your answer was perfection. 'Nuff said.

I'm going to go NC-17 and say there is a time and place when it is most attractive to hear a woman beg. If you have read OneChele's book, think office scene between Renee and Greg. Just sayin' - that was well done of you.

OneChele said...

That's deep... and true.

OneChele said...

*blushing* er, um - thanks! And major points for working the book into the comment thread.

Anything I will beg for??? Nope LOL. I hope your friend don't take her back; she is a psycho. I used to watch Snapped on Oxygen. LOL

Yes, I miss A Different World and the theme song is playing in my head right now. :)

Chris Brown-Please go sit down. No one is listening. Womp. Womp.

I am reading it now. Just got to movie night... alright then! That IS worth a little beggin'

Right now, I BEGGING OneChele to POST the video of the mentioned Stalker girl - LOLOLOLO. Guys should do a better job of listening to their Friend Girls about their Girlfriends.

Anyhoo.....

The best ADW begging episode is Jada begging Whitley to allow her to stay in the school & dorm. I will never forget Jada in the leotard over the jeans saying to Ms. W "I could learn a lot from a Sista like you!'" And Whitley fell for it. Sistahood was so up in that episode plus that one put Jada on the map - - Love It.
