Flipping around late last night while sipping a Pepto cocktail with Ginger Ale chaser (too much SuperBowl celebration), I stumbled across Ovation TV. Ovation is what A&E started out like before they went all reality on us. (12 straight hours of Dog the Bounty Hunter is a little much).
Anyway, on Ovation last night: They showed a two-hour documentary on Chess Blues Legend Howlin' Wolf (brilliant) followed by an hour of Marvin Gaye concert footage from different events. Just out of curiosity, I consulted my guide to see what else they had on deck for Black History Month. This evening there's a show called Impact, discussing the impact of certain songs on American culture. Tonight it's Chuck Berry's Maybellene. Tomorrow night, Run-DMC's Walk this Way. Also tomorrow night a documentary on Nat King Cole followed by an expose on the Rise and Fall of Death Row Records… SOLD!
Not sure which cable systems it's on, check the website to find it in your area.
Who has Black History programming to share with the group?

Last year VH1 did a hilarious series called Black to the Future, does anyone know if they are replaying it?
This sounds good. I'll DVR some of these. Some of the cable companies are doing "Black Experience on Demand" - I'm dying to see what that's about.
Oh, good stuff!
What do we know about this Jill Scott movie on Lifetime?
Not a lot.
That is a great line up! I love to find stations that cater to my needs. Yeah BET doesn't really do it for me, so I have to spends hours searching through channels to find something that would be worth watching about black people. Good find!
I was just about to say that I am DEFINITELY not depending on BET to provide meaningful programming. SpikeTV is putting on a show called Facing Ali next Monday night about what it was like to get in the ring with him. Looking forward to that.
I think you can get it on DVD
Sins of the Mother premieres on Feb. 21st on Lifetime Movie Network, not the regular Lifetime channel. It was originally scheduled for the 7th, but got pushed back because of the Super Bowl.
Ovation is great. The last ballet company I was with always had one performance taped for Ovation, they really support the arts: dance, books, music, cinema. Great job for highlighting it.
I saw they are going to do a documentary on Miles Davis too - Count me in. Thanks for the link.
HBO is playing the third installment of the Black List all month.
Just found out the folks who created one of my all time favorite series: The Wire have created a new HBO series called Treme. It was focused on musicans and locals in post-Katrina New Orleans. Debuting in Spring 2010. Cable is just killing network as far as quality, diversity and meaningful TV.
Okay I knew nothing of this channel and I definitely want to see that Death Row documentary. Heckacool. Good lookin' out. Sundance Channel is doing a great showing of Nuthing but a Man all month and re-playing Brick City for those who missed it.
I'm not sure if it's BHM programming or just PBS being PBS, but they had Sam Cook and Marvin Gaye documentaries at the end of January. Last night there was a doc on called "Harlem in Montmartre" about the jazz age in Paris that resulted from African American soldiers that stayed in Europe following WWI & WWII and another about Melville Herskovits, founder of the first African studies program. Tonight they're showing "For Love of Liberty: The Story of America's Black Patriots."
I flipped passes a channel showing as OVTV but I did not stop to see what it was. I'll check it out. TV One is doing some cool stuff with the'r "Way Black When" series.
Though I've been aware of OvationTV since last year, I must say for Black History Month they are GOING IN. Documentaries on Black Rock musicians and Miles Davis? FTW!
