Under the Covers: The Tiger/Reggie Bush Haterade Flows

The picture on the left is Le Tigre with knit cap and weights on the cover of Vanity Fair (picture was taken prior to MistressGate). The picture on the left is of oiled up, platinum dog tag-wearing football player Reggie Bush on the cover of Essence. Both men are black athletes. And both covers have drawn the ire of many. Let's talk about it for a minute.

Personally, I'm not feeling Tiger. He's never been sexy to me. Nothing about him oozed cocoa-sexy. And that was before he white-washed his public persona to the least common dominator, colored himself Caublanasian (or whatever) and married the whitest woman on the plant and then cheated repetitively on her. Good for him. What I admired about Tiger was his mind and his game. And now that I know his mind can't wrap around simple concepts like not announcing yourself on your jump-off's cell phone or sending traceable text messages, I just admire his golf game. Wildly interested to know what that will look like when he returns. That about it.

Reggie Bush I never thought a lot about one way or the other except to gloat when my Longhorns beat his team in the Rose Bowl in 2006. Or where he impacted my fantasy football team. For as long as I've heard of him, he's dated the pseudo-celebrity Kim Kardashian who is about as deep as a saucer of milk and just as interesting. Good for him. I gave him credit for assisting (sporadically) the New Orleans Saints in their past few winning seasons and wearing the all-black uniform quite well. But that about it.

Then within the span of 24 hours, I was assailed with multiple tweets and emails about these two magazine covers. Let me start by saying I haven't read either article. They could be great insightful exposés, I just don't know. For now, let's talk about these covers. I didn't care for Tiger's cover at all. First of all, I'm so tired of Tiger. But Vanity Fair could not resist in cashing in. Good for them. Secondly, he's still not coming with the sexy. The cap, the pouty expression, the sloopy-hairy nipples and not quite a six-pack just weren't working for me. I don't know whether Tiger was trying to look "urban" or "edgy" or what – none of it worked. The majority of folks on Twitter and the Blogosphere agreed. Some thought he was going Hammer (referring to when clean-cut rapper MC Hammer tried to go all hoody street with the infamous 'Pumps and a Bump' song and video), I don't know. I just wasn't feeling it. A lot of the sisters will never forgive Eldrick for not checking for Shaquanda so they took the opportunity to pile on about just how "unsexy" Tiger's picture was. Never in the history of Pro Sports have more women felt less enthusiastic about a half-naked billionaire. Right about now, you put Tiger and Bill Gates in a room with 2 sisters – Bill's getting lucky. Tiger's getting knocked the eff out… just on GP.

Reggie's picture stirred up a controversy I did not see coming. I looked at and appreciated the cocoa-sexy and the 6-7-8-pack he had going on. Made a snarky remark that Tiger needed to see what a cover shot looked like. Immediately, I was pounced upon by the sisterhood. Was I not insulted that Essence, a magazine geared for Black Women would feature a man who (as far as we know) had no time for Shaquanda and Ne-Ne? Didn't I think that putting Reggie on the cover of Essence was like putting Robin Thicke on the cover of Cosmo? {which I thought was a hilarious analogy}. Especially since this was the Black Love issue!? Okay true, target audience may be a little off but ur, uh – I was just saying old boy was fine. I didn't realize it was a social commentary. Furthermore, if we stopped putting Black Celebs/Athletes who don't date Black Women on the cover of magazines, aren't there only 3 or 4 folks left to photograph? [sorry, couldn't resist]

So I turn this over to you, BougieLand. Both the fellas and the ladies. What do you think about these cover photos? Which picture do you prefer? Would you buy either magazine of read either article? Do share.

Both were hot looking IMO, just in different ways. Regarding Reggie if we used the threshold that a Brotha must date a sista that was deep before they graced the cover alot of folk would be missing. Like Quincy Jones to name one! I think Essence should have taken the high road and had Reggie looking sexy with clothes on, with a half naked shot inside.

As a dude, neither cover gets me going but I'm less impressed with whatever look Tiger was going for here.

Ever since I saw the picture of Tiger Woods on the cover, I've been puzzling about what message the magazine and the man are trying to send. I don't get it. It seems sensible that unless you have an impressive physique like in picture 2, then it is best to leave the shirt on.

Thumbs down for the Tiger cover...it just does nothing for me...

Thumbs up for the Reggie cover...while I understand why many of my sistas feel this cover is a slap in our collective faces, it doesn't take away from the fact that the man is nice on the eyes...there are worse people that could have been featured on the Essence cover, so I'm not stressing over it.

What both of these pics do for me is what they are intended to do - make me curious enough to buy the magazine and read the article. But for the record I will say that Reggie is fine. Kimmy better stay right and tight. I think Reg could be swayed to chocolate city

based on picture alone, I wouldn't kick either one of them outta bed.

I've never been attracted to Tiger, he is just plain NOT.CUTE. Reggie Bush can date, marry, whatever or whoever he wants to. Comparing the two pics, Tiger needs to GTFOH cuz Reggie got it goin' on. The whole black men dating outside of their race argument, I.DON'T.CARE. You love who you love, sisters date outside too, and if love and support is standing in front of you, melanin should not matter, I'm just saying at the end of the day we are all humans, we just have different tans, lol.

I would not buy either magazine based on the covers. Neither Tiger or Reggie appear to have any respect or admiration Black women so why would I support them? I'm giving both magazines a big YAWN! Especially Essence.

Shout out to Brandi for being real. Ya'll ain't checking for Tiger and Reggie cuz they ain't checking for ya'll.

My only beef with the Tiger cover is this by the same woman who gave us LeKong James. She can resist "hooding up" pictures with black men. Eldrick has a scully on, really?

My lady says that Reggie has used this exact same pose in about 5-6 covers. Time to step your pose game up, son!

OneChele said...

Good points - a clothed cover shot might have been the way to go for both of these. If both guys were on covers in suits, would the reactions be as extreme?

OneChele said...

Your lady is correct, this is Reggie's Ebony/Jet Centerfold look - he can't help himself.

Troy said...

As someone who trains alot - Reggie is sculpted, Tiger is fit. I don't like either pose. They both come across over the top ethnic which I'm not sure is necessary. As you said below, I would have preferred to see both of them in a suit.

Tiger - you are not hard or hood or street. You just a regular regular with money in the bank (for now). Get gone.
Regiie - ya cute but ya trifling. Stay off the reality shows and catch some touchdowns...

Both these covers make me tired.

I don't know - in the struggle for positive African American images... I'm not feeling either of these.

I'm glad I long ago canceled my subscription to Essence and I never had a subscription to Vanity Fair.

OneChele said...

So not really feeling it, hmm?

SBChitownChick said...

For me, when they are spotlighting Black Men on magazines - give me Obama or Idris. That is all.

OneChele said...

HA! That's it? No one else gets love?

Andrea M said...

I would co-sign this... that is all.

SBChitownChick said...

That's it. LOL!

So if Mellody Hobson appears on the cover of an Essence magazine about black wealth will we criticize that because she dates George Lucas?

Why in the hell is so many black celebrities going white. We better get it together folk. Interracial marriage or coupling does not necessarily help our community and if the government is ever taking over by racist radicals, you better know where you stand. As for Mr. Woods and Mr. Bush. If they are not checking for you sisters then they are not prize worthy. Good looks and money my compliment a man, but it does not make him.

Fact: 8.4% of black married men are married to women of another race. That means that 91.6% are married to BLACK WOMEN. Please stop blowing this interracial issue out of proportion.

Btw, this "very smart brutha" broke it down:

Just for cute-sake, I'll go Reggie and hold onto the question of why we must be objectified for another day.

Talk about your "oxymoron" with an emphasis on the MORON. I am not suprised with the comments regarding Tiger. I guess his prison yard pose is a foreshadowing of his plummet to earth and a true indication of what the white media and the world really think of him. Reggie, on the other hand, though eye candy, is just another slap in the face to the black women who lust him and will never get a second look from him. OneChelle, you did your thing with this post.

Thank you kindly!

Why you sistas worrying about two men you don't have a chance with anyway?

Just once I'd like to be pleasantly surprised by your comment. Just once in 2010.

This is the best comment all day. Seriously...I totally agree. We are all just different shades of human. The real issue for me is the stereotyping going on here. Absolute sadness that a so-called piece of urban/black media has to fall in line with the over-sexualized barbaric cat-daddy stereotypical Black man persona. Though neither of these men have lived a perfect life, they are both successful in their own rights. Unfortunately, their misbehavings have been scrutinized and publicized for all to comment about. It's a dern (yes I said it!) shame that this is the focus for our media....but alas, this is the world we live in. I guess someone has to make sure the triflin' stays fresh in the world, huh?

My prayers go out for all the raggedy men AND women out there who sell themselves short...billionaires and eye-candy alike.

Which corner is this where Raheem is taking out the trash fine & nekkid? I'll need GPS coordinates, please and thank you ;-)
Great points by the way.

I tried to edit my last paragraph but it didn't take. I didn't like the line, "Women may be mad that dudes like him aren't checking for them but if he can find value in Kim Kardashian to make her more than a jumpoff, I don't think he wants much in terms of a quality mate." I don't think women are mad. I understand that it may look bad (and is his bad) if he isn't checking for sisters but...(rest of the sentence still applies).

Big ups to both mags for being just irritatingly controversial enough with the covers to sell some copies (or at least get people talking about them). let's face facts, regardless of who Reggie is with, he is fine. Tiger, not bad. Beyond that, I agree with Chele - can't go all deep social context on abs. Not everything is debate-worthy.

Mr. Analytical said...

In regards to the photos, Tiger's a golfer. I had no expectations and hey it's whatever/ He probably exceeded the expectations of the women he got with. For whatever he got, he should thank his black DNA, even if said genes are not dateworthy to him (shoot that's HIS loss, dumbass).

Reggie, well as a dude I can't front, I wish I had a body like that. Knowing the impact it would have on women, I would just walk everywhere butt ass nekid. If there was a woman across the way who's window lined up with mine, I'd give her an eyefull. Sh*t I'd take my trash out nekkid just to see what stirs up. I have to give credit where it's due.

Now as for Bush on that particular cover of Essence, I don't know, it's nothing to me. Sure it's a bad choice and doesn't coincide with the contents but hey, that's an editor's flubb. Any other issue I'm sure he'd be fine on the cover (no pun). Essence isn't a black owned magazine anymore anyway, so they all probably felt this is a good picture for the cover.

It's more important that the "average brother" check for sisters, not Reggie Bush. Women may be mad that dudes like him aren't checking for them but if he can find value in Kim Kardashian to make her more than a jumpoff, I don't think he wants much in terms of a quality mate. I'm sure if every other eligible black man had Reggie Bush's body, you wouldn't care about KK having him; you know Raheem around the corner who takes out his trash nekkid will do just fine.

Jara said...

What does Reggie's dating preference have to do with being on the cover of Essence? Maybe we can learn something from him. For example, I learned that I like 12 packs on men.

Jara said...

Why are people assuming that Reggie dating Kim means he doesn't like black women? Did he specifically say he doesn't date black women? He has dated more than one woman, right?

I date non-black men but that doesn't men I DON'T date black men.

Michelle said...

I don't have an issue with a man being on the cover of Essence. It is a woman's magazine and I think it is nice to have a fine man on the cover of the Feb. issue. Women (well, most women) can appreciate a nice looking brother. And I don't care who Reggie dates. As for Tiger, please. Not sexy at all! But I never thought he was anyway.

MotownMs said...

Just an FYI...the February "love issue" of Essence has always featured one if not more black men on the cover...I am sure if we checked back issues we might find some of the men with a bit of controversy in their lives...ahm jes sayin'...
