Bougie TV Watch: Sherri

Okay, I meant to blog about this weeks ago but you know how time slips away. Sherri Shepherd (of The View) has quite an entertaining show on Lifetime. Here is a sitcom with a predominantly black cast, fresh writing and episodes you can watch with both BougieMom and BougieBabyNephew in the room… rare. The plotlines are not the most original but are written with a freshness that is fine for a 30-minute show. Chock full of sitcom veterans such as Malcolm Jamal Warner (who looks good), Tammy Townsend, Michael Boatman and James Avery; there are actually laugh-out-loud funny moments… and I can't think of the last time I said that about a sitcom.

From Lifetime, a summary and a few clips:

Actress, comedian and cohost of ABC's "The View," Sherri Shepherd ("30 Rock," "Less Than Perfect") leaps from daytime to prime time to headline her own all-new, multi-camera comedy series, "Sherri." "Sherri" centers around a newly single mom, paralegal and part-time comedian/actress who tries to get back into the dating scene and move on with her life after divorcing her cheating husband. Sherri finds solace and support among her girlfriends at the office while juggling her hectic life.

The season finale aired tonight and it was quite enjoyable. As most of you know, I'm a fan of smart writing, add in dead on comedic timing and I'm all on. Is there another show on starring an African-American professional woman? Um, no. It's got my vote. Full episodes are online, check them out. I hope the show gets renewed for another season. If you've seen it, tell me what you think. Did you love it, hate, could live without it?

I'm not a big fan of Sherri Shepard so I have intentionally avoided this show. But I'll check it out since you have recommended it.

I like HawthoRNe, another show about a professional black woman. :) Jada Pinkett-Smith stars and co-executive produces. It's doing quite well on TNT. http://www.tnt.tv/series/hawthorne/

I I do watch the show, it struggled a little mid-season but the finale was hilarious. Thanks for spotlighting!

I caught the pilot episode which was not bad but didn't get back around to it. Since you enjoyed it, I will give it another look.

I really like this show. It gets a wee bit predictable at times but Sherri is on point with her timing and believability (is that a word?!) factor. And for the record, I hope she gets back with "Theo" (sorry, couldn't resist!).

I liked Hawthorne though I thought it went over the top dramatic a couple of times.

The cast is excellent, every actor is adept and has comedic timing. I hope for fresher storylines if it gets picked up for another season. Sherri in the club, Sherri on a date, Sherri at work - needs a little more zip.

I didn't like this one either (I know I'm poo-pooing everything today). It seemed a little forced. But I will say this - Malcolm looks GOOD, he has been in the gym, yes?

Not a big Lifetime watcher but this wasn't bad.

I have to admit I really enjoy the show. The cast is outstanding and I think the storyline has potential. I am hoping the writers will be inspired by the talented cast to write better stories.

Doesn't the little boy look and sound just like Katie from "My Wife and Kids"?

I can't wait for HawthoRNe to return. Another show with a wonderful cast. And when Jada's on you can't take your eyes off the screen. I love the actress who plays her mother-in-law and hope they have more scenes together.

I tell you the basic cable stations are putting out the quality shows; Saving Grace, The Closer, Leverage, Burn Notice (this shows needs diversity) and sadly I just heard Raising the Bar was cancelled. I tell you between the DVR and online viewing, television is fun again.
