However, over the course of the last few years, a change has come to ye olde Video Hits One. And no, it's NOT necessarily a change we can believe in. In additional to being the responsible for some of the most "disgrace to any race" reality shows: Scott Baio, Flava of Love, Charm School 1&2, Rock of Love, Celebrity Rehab, all of the incomprehensible shows dedicated to "New York" … the list is endless, VH1 of late has embraced a decidedly "urban" flair. (How ya like the euphemism?) Let's just take a look at the latest Behind the Music subjects: Bobby Brown, Pink, T.I., 50 Cent and Lil Wayne. Now I will admit to having watched each of these (love BTM) but I couldn't help but notice the trend. Maybe because the Hip Hop Honors were coming on?

No, I've been checking out VH1 and growing more and more disenchanted. Am I going to have to send VH1 the way of BET? Check the latest shows: Eddie Griffin, T.O., some love show with Ray J, Real Chance of Love, Who wants to be Diddy's next slave (paraphrasing but you take my point). Am I wrong or is the programming skewing younger and more… flavorful? My Antonio, Tool Academy, Sex Rehab – I mean, none of this is trailblazing, Emmy-in-waiting must-see-TV, is it?
I settled in to watch the 2009 Hip Hop Honors last night and the show was as I expected. Old and new Def Jam acts, great live performances (Public Enemy and Mary J/Method Man), kinda sad performances (Ja Rule and Ashanti), inappropriately dressed folks (Ashanti, Rick Ross), not so amusing commentary provided by Tracy Morgan (does he just host EVERYthing black now?). At any rate, it was the commercials for all the other junk coming on VH1 that threw me for a loop. There was not a single promo where I thought – WOW, I have GOT to see that.
So I'm asking you BougieLand, any redeeming reasons to watch VH1? Take your time, I'll wait.

Nah.
I'll stick with VH1 Soul in all of it's old school video glory.
And I won't lie, I watched Flava of Love seasons 1 AND 2, watched I Love New York season 1 and have been known to tune in for a "I Love Money" episode or two, but these days, I'm over it. Give me Behind the Music (which, I'm not gonna lie, TVOne is KILLIN' with UnSung) and that'll be all. Please and thanks.
I have to say OneChele, that VH1 isn't CNN or the discovery channel. It isn't the history channel, it isn't HGTV, the food network, pbs or A&E. Its music entertainment. Its for late teens early 20's. That is its target audience. They are doing nothing wrong with the programming they are putting out no more than Nickelodeon is wrong for only showing kids shows.
My point is..there are other channels that show more "mature" programming.
I think if you are looking for programming that is mroe rewarding mentally, you shouldn't look for it on VH1, MTV or BET (for the most part, they do have SOME programming thats good IMO).
VH1 has definitely taken a turn towards a different demographic. It is almost all reality all the time and not well done reality at that!
There is some ghetto bootyliciousness going on right now about the VH1. It is not the same channel it was 5 or 10 years ago. I am guilty of having watched one too many "of Love" shows but I couldn't afford to continue losing that much grey matter.
Guilty as charged. I watched the TO show (which was much better than you would think) and Eddie Griffin (as bad as you think). Don't get sucked back in Chele, stay strong!
Ha-ha! I watched the hip hop honors, what was up with Foxy Brown? She and Ashanti looked a hot ghetto mess.
I also think thats why on digital cable they created the vh1 soul, vh1 classic, vh1 hits or whatever
Viacom wants to have a channel for everybody but I'm not sure they've really captured the "grown and sexy" demographic yet. Agree with ASmith - VH1 Soul is probably the closest thing out there
I'm a VH1 Soul girl myself, I just didn't realize how "reality-based" VH1 had gotten.
My issue with all the "of Love" shows is that it highlights the WORST of human behavior. I guess I don't see the redeeming quality to shows like that.
Good point.
They are just mindless entertainment. Like potato chips, they have no nutritional value but you enjoy the hell out of them anyway. If you don't like it, don't watch.
You've got the mindless part right.
It is my guilty pleasure. When I want to disconnect my brain, I will turn on VH1 or MTV.
I used to love this channel. After MTV went teenybopper, VH1 was where I went to catch up on latest music videos. Now, I usually catch one of the countdown shows but that's about it.
I did check out the Hip Hop Honors, blessings upon you for your tactful description of Rick Ross' outfit. Note to fellas: Boobs belong on women... exclusively.
Come on that's some good good TV you hatin' on.
@OneChele, you didn't like Rick Ross' members only leather jacket? Ha! The song was great though.
VH1 officially blows. I used to watch Best Week Ever but they managed to ruined that.
Stick to VH1 Soul, girl.
