Bougie Music Review: Maxwell

Maxwell is back. BLACKsummers'night marks his return after nine years away from the music business. My Maxwell love has waxed and waned over the years. I loved "Sumthin' Sumthin'" - the mellosmoothe remix more than I love a Starbuck's White Mocha (that's serious). But then my girl "C" and I went to see old boy in Oakland... FAIL. Oakland is a place where you bring your "A" game or get booed. As "C" and I tipped out, old boy was getting booed. He came out (late) sat down on a stool, was obviously chemically altered and proceeded to sing the first line of his song before holding the mic out for the audience to sing. And he did that for the first three songs before wearing himself out so that he needed to cut to intermission early. May I repeat... FAIL.

With the lingering memory of this "concert" in my mind, I went ahead and downloaded the album based on hearing a chorus or two of Prett Wings. BLACKsummers'night really has a very Neo-Soul laidback vibe which I love. The whole sound is very smooth, like a late night curled up with someone special sipping on ice cold Spanish Port. The only real problem that I have with this album is that it's short with nine tracks, just under 38 minutes total.

Some of the songs on BLACKsummers' night are a little hit or miss but mostly on the side of the better. "Bad Habits" really is a nice starter for the album, followed by the lead single "Cold" with a little upbeat. "Prettywings" and "Stoptheworld" both slow things down.

For your listening/viewing joy - here is Maxwell's grown-n-sexy anthem for cheatin'-ass men kinda-sorta apologizing... a topic I know a little too much about. (The video is a little bit Showtime after Dark so you may not want to click this up at work). I give it 3 purple pumps out of 4. What do you think?

Got the same issues with Maxwell's album. I paid for a CD with 9 tracks! 9 tracks are you serious??? I love Fist Fully of Tears, it's a nice joint. But I waited 9 years for 9 tracks..I'm too hot!!!

The song featured on the video, just ok.  But I always enjoying seeing the lovely Ms. Kerry Washington, so the video is a Win for me.

I have tix to see Maxwell, in a few weeks, at Madison Square Garden in NYC, and I hope that he give a much better show than he gave you.

Maxwell is a great singer.  My all-time favorite song by him is "This Woman's Work."

In complete honesty I mostly listen to gospel but I am married and let's just be honest, there are somethings that you just can't do with music that is suppose to honor God, so a sista needs some smooth tunes to show the hubby my love and dedication. Maxwell has ALWAYS been that smooth tune for me. I love his voice, I love his look, and I love his swag. I plan on getting the new cd (download, stepping it up to mp3 mode nowadays). I tell you what, I love Maxwell so much I contemplate naming my next child Maxwell if it's a boy (probably not, but he will know that Maxwell had a lot to do with his existence, lol) I've heard snippets of Prettywings and I love it.

Chele, like you, I've been on a Maxwell rollercoaster for awhile. I loved, loved, LOVED his first CD. It stayed in rotation. I sat in a smoky club to see him perform right after that CD came out. I paid a whole $ 7 to see him (thanks to Benson & Hedges Cool Jazz nights) and he was outstanding.  I could play Urban Hang Suite nonstop without skipping past a bad song because there were none.  Embrya wasn't as good, but I was pacified by his Unplugged CD.  Then came Now.  There were a few decent songs it, but nothing like Urban Hang Suite.  I was excited to hear he was returning, ecstatic even.  And then I heard "Prett-ay Wangs" and couldn't tell what in the hell he was saying.  Was he really singing about a 2 piece meal at Popeye's? Who knows, I still haven't figured out what in the hell he's saying.  Two months after release, I still haven't bought the new CD. I may get a bootleg copy from a co-worker though.  After all, I do have tickets to his concert next month. But truth be told, I'm not really going to see him. I'm going to see Common and Chrisette.  Maxie poo just happens to be the headliner.

ditto, Love, Love, Love maxwell...Had the opportunity to see him last October in Vegas, when he first started touring it was a class act; with his band and back ground singers in tow...all in tuxedos...He sang non stop and was glad to be back...It was amazing...I ordered the new cd on amazon before it dropped for $12...A lot of hidden meanings in the words;  I would advise to really really really listen to it for a couple of days...it is phenomenal...Fistful of Tears is about challenges in a relationship and all he wants to throw is a fistful of tears...Love it...Cold is cool too!...he says his "psalm has gone frigid"...love it..just my review...Would see him a hundred more times...
